Try skipping the installation wizard and use your coupon code to unlock the maps/GPS online at Garmin's website.

Also if you downloaded the mapsource software online, the download may have been corrupted.  You may have to contact garmin tech support to try another download.

SOURCE: USB driver installed but not finding unit

Check the 6 phillips head screws that hold the front and back parts of the case together. If you have ever had the battery changed and the screws were not snugged down all the way, the USB connection on the back may not be making contact with the circuit board inside the GPS. If the screws are snug, then you may need to take the unit apart. If you are comfortable with this, removed the 6 phillips head screws. CAREFULLY pull the front and back parts of the case apart. There are wires holding the two halves together so handle these parts carefully. Looking inside at the circuit board, there are some small circuit trace pads (about 4-5 or so), in the area where the USB port would line up. Use the alcohol and q-tip to gently clean these pads and also the little spring connectors on the other part of the case. Carefully, reassemble the case. There is a rubber gasket that fits between the two parts of the case. Make certain it is not kinked or crimped. Gradually snug down each of the 6 phillips screws, working your way from one side of the unit to the other and criss-crossing. You may need to use your fingers and pinch the unit together as you snug a specific screw. When the unit is reassembled, try the USB again. If it still does not work, it may need to go back to the factory.

SOURCE: my Garmin is 255 minus the W-I have on my desk top

Hello,

Read through the manual on the below link:

http://www8.garmin.com/manuals/UsingaGarminGPSwithPaperLandMaps_Manual.pdf

If that was not helpful, follow the below procedure since you have successfully downloaded the map:

  • Launch the web browser with Garmin Communicator installed.
  • Navigate to the MapQuest website.
  • Select the "Directions" tab.
  • Enter your "Start" and "End" destinations, then click "Get Directions."
  • Edit the directions to fit your needs. You can drag the navigational line to adjust the turn-by-turn directions, remove highways from the directions and add additional destinations as needed.
  • Connect the Nuvi 255W to your computer using the appropriate USB cable.
  • Click "Send" located above the map interface.
  • Select "Send to GPS."
  • Click "Send" to transfer the map data to your Nuvi 255W. The MapQuest data will be saved to the "Favorites" section of the Nuvi 255W.
I hope you are able to get back on track now.

Good luck.

Lost maps

You do not give very much information to go on.
Perhaps you have downloaded some data such as routing or some other details from your computer via "MapSource". If so AND you have a mini SD card in the GPS, you have overwritten the SD card with the data from MapSource ...the map data on the SD card is now gone!
But the MapSource Data remains.
If you have copied the original data on the SD card, just copy and paste to re-place it.
If NOT you will need to contact Garmin to get a new SD data card.

What you have to do to prevent this in the future is to temporarily remove the Data Card from the Garmin GPS, then download the MapSource data from your computer. Then the MapSource Data goes to the GPS on-board memory.

I am the registered owner of a Garmin 276C purchased in the USA some years ago.I registered with Garmin and loaded the device onto my Computer.Since then I downloaded Maps etc as usual. Now for some unknown...

You may have to go to the Garmin.com site and download the drivers and re-install them. I'm assuming you have Mapsource installed on your PC? Once you get the drivers reinstalled, and your PC recognizing your unit, I'd highly recommend upgrading your unit software to the latest version. The operating manual can also be downloaded at that location. If this solves the problem, please come back and let us know.

I cant download mapsource to install my australian map cd

If the CD is from Garmin, it will already have Mapsource on it, and it will install when it is installing your maps onto PC. If you ever install any other maps, the CD will check to see if Mapsource is already installed and will skip this procedure.

I have lost my Mapsource Setup cd for my Garmin GPS

  1. Download MapSource software updater from Garmin. The version as of December 4, 2007 is 6.13.6, and the trick also works on Map Source version 6.13.5.
  2. Unpack or extract the content of MapSource_6136.exe
    downloaded using WinRAR.
  3. From the extracted files, run MAIN.msi.
  4. Then, run Setup.exe. Note: The sequence to execute Main.msi and then Setup.exe is important to avoid “Previous MapSource not found!” error.
  5. Garmin MapSource now installed.

There should be instructions that come on the DVD. You may also visit this site for the latest MAPSOURCE software, version 6.13.5 as of Nov 20,2007.

Notes:
  • WARNING: This software will not work unless you already own a MapSource product.
  • This version of MapSource no longer supports Windows 98, Windows Me, and Windows NT.
  • Works with Windows Vista.
