Question about Cobra 148 GTL 120-Channels Base CB Radio

1 Answer

Cobra gtl 148 seems to have no power til i push on mic connecter.

Changed mic , opened up and it looks great.tightened up female connecters that the mic plugs into at mic connection.still radio channel leds won't light up .radio won't work.speaker might make a popping noise indicating power when turning on. if i put pressure on the side of the mic connection at radio face it will work.but not always.

OK, I LOOKED AT IT AGAIN AND IT POWERS UP THE METER AND THE METER LIGHT COMES ON. IF I TAPE OR HIT IT ON THE HOUSING THE CHANNEL SELECTER WILL COME ON AND THEN GO RIGHT BACK OFF. SOME TIMES IT WILL STAY ON AND I CAN USE THE RADIO UNTIL THE CHANNEL SELECTION LEDS GOES OUT THEN RADIO IS IN OP. METER STAYS POWERED UP. THE MIC IS NEW AND PUTTING PRESSURE ON THE 4 PIN CONNECTOR WAS ONLY MOVING THE RADIO AROUND. THANKS FOR THE HELP. BW

Cobra 148 gtl cb no recive, the power supply put 20+volts inti it, what could be the problom.

Your power supply is providing 20 volts? THAT is the problem. This radio should be connected to a power supply capable of providing anywhere between 12 ~ 13.8 VDC. Twenty volts is WAY too much. You may have cause significant damage to the radio if it was connected to that voltage for any period of time.

Cobra 148 gtl-st wont transmit but receives great

Check first your microphone

• check if TX is engaging when PTT is pushed.

• check for continuity ( mic and cable )

If you have not done these steps,

try it first, or borrow other compatible mic for Cobra 148GTL

from your friends on air.

I have a 1990 cobra 148 GTL with 5 pin side-mounted mic. I recently bought a Barjan 5 pin noise canceling mic. Is the mic compatible with my cb, or do I need to change the wiring? Larry

The wiring is not likely to be the same.

The information on the radio is here:
http://www.cbtricks.com/radios/cobra/148gtl/index.htm

You will likely need to open up the mic to identify what your wires connect to to determine the correct oreintation. it is possible too you may find one of the models listed was used by Barjan and is nothing more than a rebranded microphone.

If this is a stock cobra 148 gtl 40 channel am plus side band, they don't to my knowledge come with a built in r beep. Some roger beeps are instaleed through the transmit circuit on the mic, so if not in the know Don't try to fix it.Some microphones have a beep built in. I used to install beeps on these radios using the pa/cb switch to turn them on. also try the nb switch or the swr/rf switch.
