Question about Canon ZR100 Mini DV Digital Camcorder

JVC GR-D33U won't play back some tapes

I have a JVC GR-D33U that generally works fine (I've already had it serviced for the infamous "lens cap" issue). However, when I recently tried to play back some previously recorded tapes---which used to work---I only get audio from the tape with no video (the solid blue screen appears.) Interestingly, video images /are/ there in fast forward or rewind. Recently recorded tapes seem to work fine, it's the older ones that fail.

I bought a head cleaner per some advice I'd seen in this forum and ran it through a few times but that hasn't helped yet. I don't want to run it through too many times because the JVC cleaner instructions warn against cleaning more than three times in succession. (It's not clear how long you have to wait before cleaning again.)

I don't have immediate access to another minidv camcorder to check the tapes there, so I thought I'd see if anyone here had any ideas.

Cheers

Thanks for the quick response! I had the unit repaired for the lens cap/CCD issue back in early '06. I read your comment to mean that tapes recorded before the repair will have problems (having been laid down with the old alignment), but newer recordings (post fix) will be OK. Sounds like a good explanation, but I have tapes I recorded earlier this year that have the playback problem, shouldn't those be OK if your theory is correct? Any other ideas?

Oh, and I'll lay off the cleaning.

    Thanks again,

I still thinking alignment is matter on your CAM and one more thing in your CAM it have the rubber roller it call itself pinch roller if that worm out or defective it can damaged the tape and depend the thickness and branch of those tape it make different resul you can check yours tapes which one is no picture open the lid door and look carrefully any mark deteriorate on the tape
I sugges you to bring it to JVC to check the pinch roller and re-align the tape guide and back tension it delicated and need special instruments and software service it

The tape cleaning won't help this problem, it is alignment on tape guide and back tension, like you mentioned it had been service before after they fixed the lens cap issue, usually they connected to computer to adjusted may be they missed. So I sugges you to bring it back to them if it is still under warranty or direct to JVC and take the old tape, ask them to try it after they align this unit, DO NOT use tape cleaning again because you can see picture on the new recorded
that mean the video head is good
I hope that give you some ideas

There are 2 possibilities for that symptoms in JVC GR-D347U camcorder is either aparture in lens mechanism is stuck and does not pass image towards CCD Imager OR ccd imager itself got bad.

Camcorder keeps asking me to remove lens cap

Contact JVC, they fix this error FREE. They fixed my GRD-50. It's a common fault with lots of them. Give it a go. Good luck.

Lens cap

CCD Program for This Model - GR-D33US JVC has received reports that in certain circumstances, this model may, while in the camera mode, show no picture, a distorted picture and/or display “LENS CAP” even though the lens cap is removed. We have identified the probable cause as a failure of the CCD image sensor. Repairs of units exhibiting these problems as a result of a defect in the CCD image sensor will be made free of charge at JVC Factory Service Centers. Assuming you don't see any video through the viewfinder, it could be that the CCD has died on that camcorder. It happens, though not frequently.

If the video though the viewfinder is clear, there might be some sensor on the lens ring to indicate a lens cap, or an automatic lens cap not properly disengaging when put in record mode.

Jvc GR-D33U

Apparently this same problem exists on many different models. I have a JVC grd72u. I called JVC @ 800-252-5722. I selected the "Corrective Action Program" prompt from the automated attendent. I spoke to a customer service rep. They are aware of the problem and are fixing it for free, but only until 12/31/07. I suggest you call ASAP and get your name in the computer. If the problem is something besides the CCD sensor, they will call you with the estimate to repair.

JVC has acknowledged a fault on their side that will cause certain models to display the "lens cap" error, and they offer free repairs, your model is also on the list. Here's a link to the JVC site : http://www.jvcservice.com/service/custnoticecamcorder.asp?ReqType=CCD hope this helped ;]
