Tip: The max point reward for answering a question is 15.
Try these tips to fix the so-called "black screen of death".
Tip 1: The main reason of HDMI black screen problem due to HDMI
cable may be damaged and not properly connected to the PS3 console. Please
follow below step to troubleshoot PS3 HDMI cables problem:
1) Restart your PlayStation 3.
2) Look for loose cables.
3) Try to unplug all cables except the power cord, and plug them back
in. If you found out that your HDMI cable is damaged, borrow a
friends cable and try it. If your friends cable works fine, and the
black screen error disappears. Then you can buy a brand new HDMI cable
for a replacement.
Tip 2:Only try as last resort. There is a possibility you'll lose all data on your PS3'shard drive. If tip 1 didn't work, you will need to go a step deeper and reset your console. Most PS3 gamers are not aware that Sony
actually included a black screen of death troubleshooting method and
other HDMI problems in the PS3 manual, you can find it under
the troubleshooting section - topic "console reset".
If you do it correctly, the console reset fix will allow you to reset
back your PS3 to its default HDMI settings without impacting your gamer
profile, and other storage data on the hard drive.
You will need to perform the following steps:
1. Place your PS3 in stand-by mode.
2. Hold down the touch power button until a series of beeps are heard.
3. Listen for one long beep, followed by two shorter beeps.
4. Release the power button.
5. Follow the instructions on screen.
The problem may not be the wire but the video output settings. A lot of other PS3 users have had this problem and the solution is this:
Hold your finger on the power button for 5-10 seconds and you should then hear 2 beeps. The video output should be reset to the default composite cable. You can let go of the power button after the second beep. After you've done this, you should be able to power on with the sound and video working.
you have to reset the ps3 by turning of backswitch wait 10 seconds turn
on the backswitch then press and hold down the front power button for
10 seconds you should hear 2-3 beeps that does it just wait and the
video settings have automatically detected your tv settings and are
going to ask you to save hit x to save display settings on ps3 remote
problem solved. If you still get problem message me cause its technically bad.
Well...I assume that you are using A/V at your house and HDMI at your friends house? The best way to fix it is to hold the power button down for 3-5 seconds and you will hear 1 beep then continue to hold until you hear 2 beeps. When you hear 2 beeps let off and this will take you to the restore menu and resets your video settings. The funny thing with a PS3 it will automatically pick up that you have an HDMI cable hooked up but not that you have an A/V cable. So when you hook up your AV cable it still boots in HDMI format and it has to be reset. Don't buy your cable yet it will do the same thing.

You need to tell the PS3 that you are now using the new video method. It is still trying to output video on the yellow cable, not the component. If you go to settings>video and tell it to use component, and then switch the cables real quick, it should work.
An easier solution is to do a backup from the system menu, then a "restore" (quick restore is fine), and then power it off, hook up the new cable, and it will detect the video method when it turns on for the "first" time (since the restore).
You do have component input on your TV, and that is the input you are on when you are trying this, yes?
