Im trying to set up an internet connection and Vista keeps telling me that Windows cannot locate the Network adapter. Could this be a problem with my modem or with the computer itself?

Check the modem on another PC and the problem can be confirmed. If so your Vista software has some errors and you can restore it to an earlier date.

What O.S. are U running?
PC?
MAC?
Linux?
What make/brand of router is?
If is a PC and takes long time to reboot, than U have a O.S. problem.

Any ideas why my computer keeps freezing or closing down when conected to internet thanks

it might be infected by viruses or your modem drivers is conflicitng.
first scan your pc for viruses if the problem persists then you uninstall your modem and reinstall it.

Unable to connect to internet through netgear modem. told to uninstall firewall, this I did but still no joy.

really need more information to make an educated guess, but if this netgear is recently added, try using the control panel - add/remove and remove all programs for the netgear. Then control panel - system - device manager and uninstall the modem. Keep modem connected to pc and reboot. After it detects the modem use the modem cd to load only the driver. Let windows manage the modem.

Hi there!

I'll try and help you out with your problem.

1. Have you tried a different USB slot at your computer? (Preferebly the USB port at the back of the CPU/ tower should be used)
2. Is it possible for you to try the USB modem with a different computer if my first suggestion didn't work? (Just to isolate the problem if it's the USB modem or a computer problem.)

Hope this helps.

My internet keeps dropping out

possible reasons:

Dial up:
  • phone line problem.especially in wet weather, crackling on the line ,call the telco.
  • modem\router on its way out. connect directly to the modem and try it .
  • settings for idle time before disconect needs turning off, (set to 20 minute by default)in most cases.
  • if you have call waiting ,turn it off ,as it can kick you of the net when a call is trying to comes in.
if you use ADSL and/or wireless :
  • some of the above and
  • some USB dongle are prone to drop out,
  • try using a Lan cable
  • brick walls and other hard surfaces can interfere with the signal if you are away some distance from the wireless router.
  • cordless phones can cause problems, keep them away from the modem\wireless router and wireless dongle, or adapter in the pc/laptop
good luck with this and let me know how it goes
Terry
