Want to add memory to Gateway 700x

I want to add additonal memory to my Gateway 700X Desktop computer.

What is the max memory I can install?

How many slots do I have?

Does 700x use non-ecc chips?

Do I have to buy matched cards 2 at a time?

Any help is appreciated.

I have an EMachines VL33 motherboard on a T4852 Desktop. The machine will accept 1GB DIMMs and has 4 slots. Why do I see all configrators saying ti has a 2GB memory limit?

Fitted to Gateway computers as I recall. It is something to do with the density of the Ram being higher than the chipset will support. (when using newer ram). In theory, you can fill all slots with 512Mb modules to get the 2GB capacity, but I seriously question the claims of 2GB max capacity and fear that you will only get 256 x 4 modules to give you 1 GB *the board is very old)

What is the maximum amount of memory that this board can use? Max memory per slot?

From the information I could gather at Gateway support (which was very confusing) the maximum memory for this board is 2 GB using 512 max in 4 slots. (This is an older board. I would not be very optimistic that the correct RAM modules are still available).

    Adding Memory to Gateway 420r

If you mean a Gateway 420GR (there's no "420R" listed on their site), then you can have up to 4GB of RAM and you can use 1GB modules. Here's a link to the specs page on their site:

Well hate to say it but that sort of problem results from a faulty motherboard or processor so if you say that you have changed the motherboard then you problem lies with you processor chip.

No display on screen and solid amber light on pcs' power button

it seems to be an issue with the power supply as you already tried replacing the motherboard
power supply will be less expensive do try to get it replaced first

do check that monitor iss fine
unplug the blue VGA cable which connects your monitor to the tower
if a 4 colored box moves all over the screen the monitor is fine
    and if it doesn't
get the monitor either repaired or get it replaced.

No display on screen and solid amber light on pcs' power button

To el_cid_132: Did you mean to say a solid amber light on the MONITOR's power button? If, after all you've tried with the computer, you still have no display, it's a pretty good bet your monitor is bad. Try another monitor to verify the computer function. Take a close look at the pins in the monitor's input cable plug. They are pretty easy to bend, and you may have one not making contact.

To Jaffe: It's a simple job to remove the hard drive from your laptop and hook up to another computer to copy anythig off that you want to keep. I don't know what a shop in your area would charge, but it should be reasonable. As for replacing the system board, a quick Google search for "MX6448 motherboard" turned up several sources, price range $250-$300. Usually it's not worth putting a new system board into a laptop unless it's a very high-end model. You can buy basic laptops now for around $400, and you'd be getting brand-new with a warranty.
