DMC-TZ3 lens protection will not open or close, is dented

The camera was dropped and the lens dented, so now the lens protector will not shut. How much do you think this would cost to fix?

When I turn my DMC-TZ3 on, the lens open's up then shut'soff then open's again then shut's off again and a message appears saying shut camera off and try again, will not stay open why is...

A recycling lens is usually caused by either a low or worn out battery (how old is your battery? If more than a couple years, it would be definitely time for a new one. Here's a selection.). If a new battery doesn't help (but it really does sound like you need a new battery), the next problem that could cause this is a lens error. Unfortunately, many cameras that fall prey to lens error problems can only be corrected by professional repair. But, here are some last resort troubleshooting steps that you can try that may correct it. They only seem to work for less than 40% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty (or repair cost approaches that of the camera), they're worth that try.

The lens protector is sticking and won't open and close properly

You've probably got a bit of grit stuck in the mechanism. You can buy puffer brushes from photo-shops. Its a fiddly job but i'd suggest teasing at the mechanism with one of these puffing/brushing until its free.

Lens won't come out

If the camera is powering on as indicated by a normal screen, you can sometimes coax out the lens by rapping the camera against the heal of your other hand, or a hard surface covered with a cushion, like a double with towel.

The idea is to try to free it up without damaging the camers. This problem is common on cameras if dropped or have a few years on them. It is even more common for the Lens Cover on the TZ3 to behave this way. If it is the plastic lens cover that won't open, you can coax it open with a toothpick and if it closes again, I would just carefully pull this plastic cover right out and as a manual plastic cover that will fit the lense.

In any case, it is getting dated by the TZ5, so an alternate is to sell the defectic TZ3 on Ebay and buy a newer TZ5, new or used, on ebay to replace it. Reparmen buy popular cameras like the TZ3 to fix and resell them. If you have everything that came with it, including the box, it is probably worth $40 as is.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ3 shutter doesn't close all the way and gives message "please turn camera off then on again"

My camera got dropped into the dirt. The dirt grains are detrimental to the plastic mechanics of the lens system, they imbed themselves into the plastic and become like sand paper. I took my whole camera apart - something that I would not recommend but I was desparate. I don't think I can save my camera, it needs a new optics.

If the shutter has problems it is most likely that the thin aluminum casing at the front of the lens got bent and you may be able to bend it back with a thin screw driver, that you can manage to insert between the plastic casing of the shutter and the aluminum cover. Just where the aluminum casing ends at the front of the lens. But be careful, you may otherwise damage the aluminum and the looks of your camera. If you got dirt in there, you may want to manually (carefully) open the shutter when the camera is shut off, let it close, etc. while blowing air between the gaps of the shutter blades. You can buy a 'Cleaning Duster' spray bottle from Office Depot and use that. But be carefull to hold the bottle straight, don't tilt it or the liquid content will spray over your lens and you have to clean the oily residue with a solution of soap and water (I had to) and wet a paper tissue (use a Kleenex that is not impregnated with a lotion, on the back of the box it will tell you 'Not recommended for cleanig eyeglasses'.

Hope that helps.

Stephan

If that doesn't work, then you may have to send the camera in for repair.

Lens cover stays open

hello lmsmith, the reason the lens protection shutter does not close, is that it is either jammed by sand, dirt or sticky substance. it is going to need cleaning by a qualified technician.
