Question about Maytag 24 in. MDB8600AW Jetclean II Built-in Dishwasher

Cloudy residue left on dishes, especially seen on glasses

We live in Mexico for six months of the year. Our dishwasher is just a year old and the residue has been getting worse. We will try removing the arm and clean it as suggested. However, I understand there is a product on the market that cleans away some of the hard materials that are in the water. It is called Dishwasher Magic. If you are familiar with the product, would it be possible to list some of the ingredients in order that I may replicate it here? Thank you.

They are called "rinse agents". Another brand is "Jet Dry". These chemicals cause water to be more slippery and sheet off your dishes, rather than stick as droplets. Some websites suggest you can use plain vinegar as an alternative, particularly if you are battling hard water.

Items in the bottom tray are clean; items in the top are not.

The first thing to check is whether the spray arms are clogged up. Small, hard food particles such as pepper seeds can block the holes. Some spray arms can be removed very easily for cleaning. Our old Kenmore spray arm needed a star-shaped bit. Check the overhead spray arm as well as the ones under the racks. You might also try running Lime-Away through if the inside looks clogged up with calcium deposits.

In our old Kenmore, we had food residue on the top rack when the grinder blade was chipped, broken or obstructed by an olive pit, a date pit or a cherry stone. Don't know why the top was worse than the bottom. A new one cost about $25 at that time and was not to hard to replace, but it is a poor design, since it is nearly impossible to keep such things out of the dishwasher. We replaced the grinder three times in 5 years.

Even though modern dishwashers brag that you don't have to rinse first, it is helpful to knock off seeds and pits that can cause trouble. To save water, have a small vessel of water--perhaps a pan you are soaking--and use a brush to quickly swipe each plate or bowl before loading.

I have a hotpoint HDA 3700 dishwasher that is about four or five years old. I has stopped rinsing thourghly, do you have a suggestion where I should start looking?

Make sure your water temperature is hot enough to dissolve the detergent, because the unrinsed residue could be undissolved detergent. If, however, it's food residue, you probably need to check your sprayer arms. The upper arm attaches to a tube in the back of the dishwasher. If the support clamps come loose, the upper spray tube will not be flush with the tube and can't carry water to the sprayer arms. Also the sprayer arms can become clogged with paper remnants, bone fragments, or pieces of peeling. You'll need to remove the sprayer arm and flush it at your sink. If there is a jet that is clogged, tweezers will help remove the residue.
Finally, the bottom of the door INSIDE the washer often get covered with gunk. Be sure and gently wash the bottom of the door INSIDE. You can open the door, spray some window cleaner on the bottom and then gently brush away the 'gunk.' Rinse with hot water from a pitcher or your sink sprayer and this can eliminate some of the residue that is showing on your dishes.
I hope this helps. If it does, please come back to Fixya and rate my answer.

Poor Cleaning and getting worse

A common cause of poor washing is improper loading—dishes block or impede the spray arms or prevent the soap dispenser from opening. On the other hand, if your dishwasher has chronic problems with washing, the problem may not be your dishwasher. Your home's water pressure may be too low, the water may be too hard, you may not be using the right amount of detergent, or the water temperature may not be hot enough
