I have the same problem.  Don't know why I can't delete the files but I found a workaround.  I downloaded a program called "Unlocker 1.8.7" that program allows the files to be deleted.

HOW TO BYPASS THE CRAPPY SOFTWARE
---------------------------------------------
1. Install WD Smartware and update it.
2. Run Virtual CD (VCD) Manager at http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/updates/?family=wdsmartwareutilities
to remove the virtual CD drive.
3. Use Control Panel add/remove programs to uninstall WD Smartware.
4. Everytime When you plug the hard drive in Windows will come up with the look for drivers window hit 'Cancel'
5. Now use it as an ordinary hard drive!

Hi, I am new but I had the same question about 16 hours ago. i bought my WD PassPort and when i backed up my computer i realized that i did not want some files to be backed up and noticed that i could not delete them. That angered me. After doing much research i found this sight and read the help provided. But what I had figured out my self is this, these external hard drives are not only meant to back up your computer but can also be used for a mass storage device (like a USB Drive). The program that you download upon plugging your WD drive into your computer is just for backing up your computer and retrieving the files if your computer crashes. So when you plug your drive into your new computer after your old one crashed and click retrieve to original place, it is like your computer never crashed. other then that if you want to just load files or folders on to the drive and be able to add & delete all you have to do is the same thing you would do when you use a Flash drive (USB Drive).

I'm having a crappy time with WD My Passport - hate it! I backed up inadvertantly some malware filled videos which I spent hours and days to get rid off on my computer - and now I retrieved them back after a crash. How on earth can I get them of the "My Passport?" I am having a meltdown.

Hello, I would like to back up all my data on my current drive which is a 160 GB but overwrite what I already have. What is the process.

Open "My Computer".
Right-click the icon for the Passport.
Choose 'Format'.
Choose 'Quick-format'.
In a very-few seconds, _ALL_ the files on the Passport will be deleted, and the Passport will be 100% "empty".

Then, do a backup from your 'C:' drive to your Passport.

Xp not recognizing my 250gb WD passport

The Western Digital My Passport line, besides the Essential Series, is originally formated for a Mac (in the HFS+ format) and as such cannot be read by Windows PCs. You can either get a program to read the External such as Macdrive, or format it to NTFS or FAT32; formats that are readable by Windows. I would recommend formatting it to NTFS, because you can only transfer up to 4 Gigabyte files to FAT32, while NTFS is nearly limitless.

Delete that video in other pc's with deepfreeze to keep away from system failure. You need to scan your passport, vista is more tricky than xp anything about viruses will cause them to freeze or to reboot on their own to prevent system failure.

Western digital passport essential harddrive 250 gig

It assumes that the drive C is the drive you booted from or the "root" drive. You must make it something other than "C". Try putting in a camera card, hooking up an external drive or other device that the computer makes drive "C" THEN hook up your passport. It will be "D" or "G" or something other than "C" and it will work.
