I have a T30 and am having the same problem -- there is no physical switch to turn on wireless. wtf?!

  • Anonymous Dec 29, 2008

    Hi
I have the same problem. I went to a service center and apparently my Wifi card is dead.
T30 are a little old and so probably is your Wifi card.Your Wifi adapter may be 'dead'. Apparently they become dead after a certain time.
You can find a used one on ebay. Attention don't buy anything else that one that is 100% supprted by your T30. Don't pay too much dollars either. I am not sure the T30 worth investing more. Hope this help.

quite right, not a good answer...

    Seriously though..

Most laptops do have a button somehwere where you can toggle the wireless on and off, normally its close to the button that switches the bluetooth on and off..

i presume you have windows vista ?
go to your network properties and just check if the wireless netword has been disabled, if it is disabled in windows you can toggle the manual switch on and off as much as you like it aint gonna work...

unfortunately it is quite easy to accidently disable it in windows, a simple right click and disable on the wrong connection in the system tray is all it needs, especially when you were connected to the internet and right clicked the wrong icon, since windows, in its infinite wisdom puts the network icons next to each other... design flaw ? or just not thinking ahead my microsoft.. either way.

In the network properties you simply right click the relavant network connection and click "enable"

another option is that the wireless device may be disabled in the bios... in which case as far as windows is concerned your laptop wont have one... so check that out as well..

then lastly, if all the above seems in order check in your device manager and see if it is installed properly, no yellow exclamation marks next to network adapters -> wireless xxxxx

if you need more details please let me know and ill try to assist further..

oh, and sorry for the crappy answer earlier....

You need to download the drivers for your Netgear.
The IBM drivers also need to be found,Depending on your model, it may have WiFi. From IBM spec sheet:
  • 10/100 Ethernet installed on the system board
  • Selected models will have Intel Wireless and modem Mini PCI combo cards
  • Selected models will have CISCO Mini PCI card
  • Selected models will have Bluetooth communication daughter card

Where is the IBM T30 wireless switch on the keyboard?

Don't try to locate a hardware switch, this model has a software switch. In other words the wi-fi is not activated by the Fn+F5 combination. Try to locate an enable - disable switch at the IBM software toolbox.

We can't get our IBM T30 to connect with our Linksys router . The computer has a 3com wireless card

Has the Wireless card ever worked attached to another wireless router?

Is the card an internal miniPCI card, and is it an official IBM card for your region? Thinkpads check whether the card is for the correct region before configuring them in the Windows drivers.

Are you using the Thinkpad Assistant Wireless tool. I have found that it appears to be impossible to configure this software for 64 bit WEP or WPA PSK authentication.

Wireless button

The T30 laptops do not have a on/off button that turns the wireless card on.
Once the wireless card driver is installed the wireless card will detect any wireless router and access point within its range. You need to configure the wireless card to connect into the wireless router or access point eg. the encryption, SSID etc.
The Thinkpad laptops have different wireless LAN cards installed, when you install a wireless card driver and it doesn't work, then install a different model wireless card driver. Also make sure the XP or Vista version of the wireless driver matches the Windows version that is installed on the laptop.

I have a T30 IBM Think Pad and cannot find the wireless switch. Can someone help me?

I don't think the T30 has an actual physical switch for the wireless. The ThinkPad button will show you how to do the wireless setup/repair. If you have Bluetooth on it, the Bluetooth indicator should be near the hinge.
