Question about Makita 5" Disc Sander GV5000

1 Answer

Makita gv5000 5" disc sander won't work

I plugged in my sander and it worked for a few seconds then stopped. I had tripped a breaker. After switching the breaker back on the sander still would not work. I have tried the sander in other outlets in the barn and house since then and it doesn't work. Nothing happens when I plug it in and depress the trigger. I don't have the manual anymore. Does the sander have an internal fuse or something? This sander has had just light use over it's life. Thanks for any advice, Joan F.

There isn't an internal fuse. by the sounds of it you probably have a short, a bad brush, or some arcing.

if you use your sander for fine sanding (100+ grit paper) you have to make sure to clean out the motor housing. Fine sanding dust, like any fine dust, creates alot of heat when aerated and can melt the plastic brush holders or can cause the electricity to arc from one wire to another inside the housing.

my advice is to take the 8 (i think it's 8) screws out of the side of the gun and carefully pull the halves apart. there isnt alot you can mess up inside and just visually inspect the wires for burns or melting on the brush holder.

here's a breakdown if you need it.

if you find something inside that you're not sure of, or if you have any additional info i'll keep checking in on this.

You likely have something bound up or a bad bearing. Take the belt off and turn things by hand to verify they work smoothly

Oscillating drum sander runs a few minutes and stops

This usually occurs if the motor is overheating and the internal circuit breaker is tripping. After it cools down, it self resets. This can be caused by bad bearings or parts dragging the motor down, making it work hard enough to over heat and trip the breaker. If you are running it on an extension cord or circuit that isn't able to provide it with the amps it needs the motor will overheat and trip the breaker also.

Need new power cord for Makita sander. Looks very much like the Makita 9924DB. Where can I get this part? Live in Canada

If you want the Makita cord for this tool it's part number 664026-2. It can be ordered through several online sites like www.ereplacementparts.com for about $22 +shipping. You can also use any 18-2 power cord (18 guage-2 leads) with the molded plug end on it, available at most repair shops and some retailers for about $10. Attaching it to the switch is easy, just mirror the old cord as far as how long each lead should be and how much wire to strip off.

Our Kenmore dryer just stopped. It appears no

Try resetting the dual breakers in the house electrical panel--push off, then on. If works, ok. If the breakers trip again, look for a shorted (to case) heating element within the dryer. The drum must be removed to service the heater(s).

Orbital sander doesnt orbit!

Never start the Sander without first placing it against the surface to be sanded. In free air the Sander will not osolate.
