DLP Colors Are Off - Picture Is Mostly Blue and Yellow

My DLP is about 5 years old. In recent weeks the color has been gradually changing from what would be considered normal, to a picture with a more blue and yellow hue. It appeared to get worse over time and now the picture is very blue and yellow. Recently, I've replaced the lamp and the color wheel. Neither had any impact on the picture.

What could cause the color to shift over time that's not related to the color wheel?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Sounds like you've lost your red video signal (chroma) somewhere along the line. This tv has a 3 board video path. Analog main pcb --->Digital main pcb --->DMD pcb. The analog has all your inputs on it, except DVI and RGB which go straight into the digital board. The digital scales (upconverts) the signal to HD (1080 or native) and sends it to the DMD or light engine. See which inputs are distorted. If only DVI is clean then you problem is the analog board. If you menu and everything is distorted then suspect the DMD board. If you run component or DVI through the resolutions (480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i) you can get an idea between the digital board and dmd. The menu is generated on the digital board. Somewhere red is getting lost.

It will cost you probably in the area of $700.00 to replace the Light Engine. I don't think it would be a good idea to repair it. DLP sets have been out of production a few years now due to high failure rates of the light engines for all makes and models and the consumer cost for the lamp.

Did this start occurring after you replaced the lamp?

The reason I ask is I had the same issue after changing the lamp and it was caused because when I took out the old lamp I noticed dust in the lamp housing which I attempted to blow away.

This caused the problem because some dust got further into the projector, specifically around the color wheel. I sorted it out by taking the projector apart following the instructions here:

http://tantht.blogspot.com/2009/02/how-to-remove-dust-blobs-from-optoma.html

(note my HD70 was out of warranty, if yours is not, I would recommend contacting Optoma to get it fixed).

Follow the above instructions to step 14 and then locate the color wheel which is at the front of the projector behind a dark gray, plastic type square shaped cover.

You have to be very careful here, but remove the color wheel (there is one screw holding it in place) - note it

Samsung DLP Facial Colors off after changing color wheel

Do you mean that red and blue are reversed? If so, you may need to remove a jumper, see end of linked article. Pinkish-yellow or orange sounds like a good description of skin tone, but perhaps too intense. If the color is too intense, can you just lower the color level with the color control? Or can you just change the tint with the tint control? Otherwise, see http://www.jangro.com/electronics/samsung-dlp-replace-color-wheel/ including the comments at the end.

Picture dimming and an ominous clicking sound

If this set is really only 5 weeks old, place a warranty service request for repair. This should not be happening. Either the ballast is bad or the lamp. In any case, either should be covered under warranty.

Please keep us updated.

Dark picture on RCA Scenium 61 in DLP

Yes, the lamp will gradually get darker as it nears it's end. The rolling lines sounds more like the set is on a local channel for the cable hook up. If your local area has a channel 3 or 4 live terestrial broadcast simply tune the cable box output to the other one, the same for the tv.
If this is cable/local broadcast issue it will go away in Febuary when the NTSC broadcast ends.

Samsung HLR5067W goes from a normal picture to snowy green color

Greetings!

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it is not something that has a quick fix. Without inspecting it myself it is impossible to say, but the last three of these that I have seen have been bad digital boards and can be a real bear to change, even when you have experience.

I would get slightly different video symptoms when I would switch between the coaxial input to the component input to the HDMI input. But in all cases my on screen display and menu were anomally free. Hope this was helpful, even though I don't think it is something you should attack yourself.

Good luck!
Rob

DLP Colors Are Off - Picture Is Mostly Blue and Yellow

You are missing either red drive signal to CRT or you have a cold / fractured solder joint on the television. Also with the set unplugged check with a non metalic object like a ruler or a wooden spoon and start tapping around in the front or back of set and see what happens. See if you can narrow which area of the set has a problem... Good luck future technician.. Happy holidays.. Jay

Hitachi model 57F500A

Your unit uses a Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) for each color.
Since you didn't say that it was a gradual change, I suspect the CRT filament has failed open rather than a slow death of internal emissions.

Considering the very high level of light asked of these CRTs, I am amazed they last as long as they do.

The replacement and almost certain necessity of initial alignment and color balance, this is beyond DIY possibility and is likely going to be fairly expensive.

After 5 years of use, the other CRTs are somewhat (if not a lot) degraded so don't be surprised when a tech advises replacing them all and I think it may not be a whole lot less expensive than replacing the set although looking at the specs for that set indicates it is not obsolete by any means.
