Question about Bose Lifestyle 20 System

10 Answers

Bose Model 20 LED doesn't work for the second time.

The Led went out a little over a year ago and I sent it to Bose for a $175 repair. Now it is out again and I am fed up with Bose. Very difficult to use any of the features without the LED working. Is there help out there for the problem without dealing with Bose?

I believe the answer to my problem is pretty lame. There wasn't any technical help given as advertised when I paid you the $10 fee. If the aanswer is hte best you can do I am requesting a refund.

Not sure where to post this respone to your question so I will do it here. I think the backligh is my problem because nothing shows on the display.

My problem is when the Bose Lifestyle Model 20 Music Center is turned on the display is dark. I don't know if the proper way to describe the problem is the led doesn't work or the backlight doesn't work. So far the responses from my posting haven't given me any specific information about repairing the problem. I already know it is difficult to operate the system with the display dark and I know I may need to use a repair service. What I am looking for is help to take care of the problem without sending the unit to Bose. Can you give me the advice needed to personally make the repair?

  • gene948 Feb 08, 2009

gopi 20 suggested a reset by unplugging the unit for 30 minutes then reconnectiong the power. I did it without success. Any other suggestions?

  • gene948 Feb 08, 2009

Other than send it in for repair there wasn't a solution offered. Nothing that I didn't already know!

I won't use this service again.

Welcome to Fixya! If you want to Repair this Yourself, You can Disassemble the Unit to Access the Digital Display. I believe that the Display is not Powered by L.E.D. Bulbs But is a Digital Liquid Display. There is a Slim chance that Radio Shack may be able to get you a New Readout Screen for this Unit. You can check and see if there are L.E.D. Lights that you can Change, You can get these at Radio Shack also. You will need to Solder these onto the Board tp Replace them. If none of this will work, Then you will need to Contact Bose and Make them send you a Replacement System as this Unit has a Major Problem and You do not want the Same unit back as a Repaired Unit. Please Rate My Response! Thanks!

If the unit works, but only the display does not work, then you need to test and eventually replace following parts:

No lights at all:

Control panel ribbon cable/connector

No backlight:

Backlight lamp, controlled by a little circuit on board, also the couple of capacitors in the power circuit on main board should be tested.

Backlight and no display:

LCD Display - and also ribbon cable connector.

If you want to fix it yourself, then better to get the service manual.

Bose parts are never redistributed, to get service manual and replacement parts you need to order directly from Bose.

You need to take apart the unit , and start checking that it is not just a ribbon cable connector that slipped out.

If the problem is not a lose display cable, then you will need to follow service manual and use a multimeter to fix the problem, or go to a local electroniuc repair.

Even taking apart a bose unit is difficult, they usually have alock at the back side, download and follow instructions on service manual below.

To download the service manual , download WinRAR archiver first, then download both files below and unpack them.

This is joyce
If you would like to try and fix it yourself let me help you to get the manuel uploaded for you go to diplodocs.com and put in your model# and put in bose. and then upload it. this should help you to diagnose the problem, I personally think its a bulb. I have a system that is the same and it looks like a bulb. but you may need to check this out. or you can go to bose.com and you can get manuel from them for your system.
thanks

• Green LED: The green LED serves a dual purpose: general system health and serial data received.
The green LED will blink once per second with a 50% duty cycle (i.e. on for ½ second, off
for ½ second) if the system booted and is running normally. If the unit is in the SmartSpeaker “Off”
condition, the green LED will blink briefly (approx. 0.1s ON time) once every 5 seconds.
• The green LED will also toggle whenever a serial data byte is received. This will interrupt the
normal 1 second blink rate. The green LED blinking faster than 1 Hz usually indicates that it is
receiving serial communications.
• Amber LED: The amber LED serves to signal 3 conditions: power applied/boot status, S/PDIF
status and clipping status. When power is first applied the amber LED will light briefly. If the PROM
FLASH checksum is incorrect or hardware does not pass power-on self test, the green LED and
amber LED will alternately blink at approximately a 5 Hz rate. If the green LED is blinking at its
normal, 1 Hz rate, a blinking, 1Hz amber light indicates that there is no valid S/PDIF signal
present: If the amber LED is off while the green LED is blinking normally, then valid S/PDIF is
present and being received. Finally, if the amber LED will briefly blink (in this case, only when valid
S/PDIF is present) when the satellite amps are clipping. This should only occur when playing the
system at very high levels.

but if the led is not flashing .it means either the soldering connection of the led on the boaRD Is either got loosed or the led is turned faulty.you can get the new replacement led if its turned faulty.the only led will cost you with proper set at $5 in radio shack website.but if its soldering problem then the led will be ok.just get it soldered the led will start functioning properly.

Welcome to Fixya !

Is it just the Led not working or there are some problems with the system performance. If its just the LED then probably you can open the chasi and try replacing the fused leds using the datasheets and schematics in this link - http://www.eserviceinfo.com/index.php?what=search2&searchstring=Lifestyle+20. Also since this model is discontinued in 2003, I think getting the replacement parts is a bit of tough work .. but any way give it a try.

Thanks for using Fixya !

Any if you are not comfortable in ripping the system apart, better leave it to a technician near by and he should be able to replace the LEDs at ease.

Of course, you can take it to a local authorized service center or Electronic Repair Technician.

Normally LEDs have a service life of 30,000 hours PLUS there must be a different problem.

A technician will be able to sort out voltage surges, power supply issues, and PLC problems with his specialized equipment.

Sending to BOSE is like going into a dealership for a $30 oil change when the quickie lube next door does it for $16.

Get out your phonebook and let your fingers do the walking!

Unfortunately, there is no end-user fix on this one. Leave it to a professional - not a scam artist.

Thanks for using FixYa - a FixYa rating is appreciated!!

Bose Lifestyle 12 Music Center DISPLAY display light number its not working anymore

I have had problems similar to this on many devices and it is usually a dud LED (light). You can technically de-solder the current LED and replace it but it's not a job for anybody without very good soldering skills.

Check to see if your system is still in warranty as this should be covered. Any electronics repair shop should be able to fix this for you.

A new remote is the simplest and best bet. I know of no way to repair a remote without making it irreparable. Though you might check the infrared LED i the front. Does the light on the remote illuminate when you press a button?(assuming it has that.)

Bose 3-2-1 Remote Control stopped working

I purchased a LAZBOY universal remote (at Fred Meyers, on sale for $9.99) and after a bunch of research and trial-&-error, was able
program it with a code (1629) which works reasonably well with the
Bose 3-2-1.

I don't have all the system-level functions (which I never utilized anyway) but do have all the basics as far as power, volume, source, and CD/DVD control.

Use a Laser Lens Cleaner. Run it thru the player a couple times. Use one that has fluid with it, you can find them at any electronics retailer for 15-20. If it still has the same problem, the only thing to do is send it for repair, they will replace the transport. Average cost of 125-175 on a changer. Hope this helps

Rear Wirelss speaker do not work

With the main unit turned off, press and hold [REMAIN] on the home theater's remote for 4 seconds. (The REMAIN button is directly under the 7 button). Once held down for 4 seconds, the Volume Indicator on the main unit will turn on for 1 second. Release the [REMAIN].

Press the [RESET] on the back of the Wireless Receiver 2-3 times. The Standby/On LED on the front of the Wireless Receiver will blink 3 times

Turn on the main unit. The Link LED on the wireless receiver will light up if process is done correctly. The front of the main unit will no longer say REAR CHK and the rear speakers should now function correctly.
