if the card reader is external, have you tried inserting it into a different USB port?
If it is internal, re-boot the computer as previously suggested. Does windows install the new hardware? is the device listed in device manager?

you'll have to re-install the card reader. What make/model is it? It may be as simple as plugging it in to a different USB port and letting it install automatically.

how are you inserting this into the computer? do you have a card reader? or are you just trying to do it through the camera?

Just reboot, it will automatically enable the card reader.

You have not disabled the slot, only disconnected it you could try Device Manager and scan for hardware change.

Never edit the registry to attempt to fix something a simple reboot will fix.

Hard drive errors

If your had drive is getting lost clusters when you run scan disk, it means the hard disk is nearly worn out Whilst scan disk will repair and locl out these bad sectors so data is not written to these areas, the number of bad sectors will increase and it is adiseable to back up your data frequently so you won't lose your data when the hard drive fails completely.
I recommend you replace this hard drive as soon as possible and install Windows on the new hard drive plus the computer's device drivers, your programs and data. You do not want the hard drive failing at an inconvient time.

I have a aver tech 3.5" HDD enclosure i need the drivers for window 7

There are no special drivers - the unit (when it has a disk in it - it won't be recognized without it) will be recognized as a generic Removable Media and will use the generic driver.

I have a 16 GB verbatim brand jump drive that I cannot open up. I have tried other usb ports on different computers. Is it common for jump drives to go bad? Do you have any suggestions? Thank you!

If not "safely removed" USB drives can go bad. If your system recognizes the drive when plugged in you can try doing a scan disk on it and check for any errors that may be preventing you from accessing the file system.

Plug in the USB drive, check my computer and see if the drive is there, if it is, right click the drive, click properties, and tools and select the option to scan the disk.

If you do not see the drive in My Computer, click start, Run, type DISKMGMT.MSC and click OK. Check and see if your drive is being recognized in Disk Management.

If you still do not see it in Disk Management, they you may just have a faulty jump drive, at which point you should contact Verbatim to see if they have any other recommendations or if it is still under warranty.

Will not read any disks except for store bought ones ???

Did you mean hard disk? If so, make sure you buy the right hard disk, there are something different between IDE and EIDE hard disk although their interface look similiar. Go to BIOS to auto detect the HDD if available. The jumper settings on the hard disk can not both set to be master if they are on the same ribbon of IDE interface. If BIOS recognize the hard disk and not reading, there might be something wrong with the disk. Try it on another computer or do some scan on it. It is an option to call Dell and ask them whether they have some hard code of their machine so the machine only read disk with some hidden information too just in case. If the disk is not a hard disk, then there could be standards issue of media too. You can check the specification of your machine and see the detailed version of the interface and see whether you have the same version of standards on your disk.

Wull not play commercial DVD on DVD player installed

Some viruses disable removable drives, so be sure that your antivirus is current an you have done a complete scan.

If it recognizes that it is a DVD, the software might have to be reinstalled. You can try opening the DVD player manually, it may recognize it then. There are several firmware updates on the dell site for the DVD drives.

Try booting the computer with a restore disk (just abort if it actually starts). If the drive does not recognise dvds (on boot and if you open the computer icon and see if the disk shows up) as a last resort before replacement, you might try a commercial drive cleaner.

Transfer folder(s) of pictures from my Kodak EasyShare program to 'My Pictures'on my computer. having problem with 'Burn cd/dvd' application on EasyShare software.

you're not trying to burn the pictures to your 'MyPictures' thing.

close that and go get the EasyShare disc, your EasyShare Kodak camera (i hope) and your transfer cord

Plug your transfer cable into the camera from the small end, and the large end into the USB port of your computer. This allows the computer to recognize the camera and begin building adapters for it.

Insert the disk for the Kodak Easy Share program into your disk drive. Go to your "Start" button and hit "Run." This will bring up a window allowing you to choose the letter of your disk drive to find the file to run. Your computer may have Autorun, so it is possible you do not have to follow this step. If you do not have Autorun, click on the letter of your drive and choose the "Easyshare.exe" file when it populates. Then hit "Run" on the bottom of the window to continue.

Click on "Next" on your Install Wizard when it begins. This sets up the program to be used if you do not already have it on your computer. Click "Next" on all following boxes, as this gives you the basic set up and files needed to run the program.

Wait for the program to begin. Once it has populated the window with a gray Kodak Easy Share block at the top of the window, you are ready to begin. Click on "Add Pictures" on the top left corner of the window. A new window will generate. Go down to the last half of the window on the left and click on the Kodak Easy Share file. This is where your pictures are being taken directly from your camera, which is the drive or USB port it is connected to.

Choose on the next box the folder you wish to save your pictures under. You can opt to leave it in the Easy Share folder, or to rename the folder for the type of pictures you are uploading. If you have wedding pictures, you could right click on the folder and hit "Rename." Then type in "Wedding Pictures" and click anywhere on the screen. This will save your folder name.

Delete the pictures from the camera after they upload is an option you can choose to click on if you want your camera erased when the pictures are done. If you want this, click the box next to the "Delete From Camera" option under the folder name area. When you are ready to upload, click "Done" in the bottom left corner of the window. Now you have uploaded your pictures to your computer and cleared your camera.
