    Kia ora,

I don't know if this helps but my router is a D-link 2xr DI634M. Thanks for your help.

  • artee57 Jan 01, 2009

    Kia ora,

I have followed your instructions and can see the password section, but it doesn't disclose the password only a series of dots. Is it possible to change the password from there or how can I see that actual words? Sorry to be a pain.

  • artee57 Jan 01, 2009

Sorry - How many do you need for WEP which is the current setting.

  • artee57 Jan 01, 2009

This is becoming ridiculous - How many is it for the WPA type?

    Thanks

  • artee57 Jan 01, 2009

Thankyou - the problem is solved and key reset. Have saved it in a safe place.

Open your web interface and type "http://192.168.0.1" into the address bar, then hit "Enter" or "Return."

Step2Use "Admin" as the username and leave the password blank when the login screen appears.

Step3Click "OK." You should now see the D-Link configuration screen.
Locate the "Home" tab in the D-Link Configuration screen, and click on the "Wireless" button.
There you will see your security key.

Write down the password in a secure location.

Yes , if you are on the wirless security page, you can back out that password and type in a new one. Depending on what encryption you choose, WEP (original) WPA (more secure)you will need to have enough lettersand or numbers for that encryption type. Be aware that older PC' and laptops will only respond to WEP, they won't use WPA without updates to the Network adapter (and the update may not be available).

on WPA, you can put in a paraphrase and it will gernerate a key. Then on your computers you put in the paraphrase. A paraphase could be one word or more like " gators" or "new york new york"

The encryption code is in your router's wireless setup.
To connect your computer to a wireless router, you click the Refresh network list, then Choose your wireless network and then click Connect to your secured Wireless Network, it will asks for a Network Key before allowing you to connect into your wireless network. This Network Key is either the WEP, or WPA or WPA2 Encryption key that is configured in the Wireless settings in the Router. The Passphrase is an alternate way to setup the Encryption key.
When you are requested for a Network Key, you can just enter the Passphrase or WPA or WPA2 key that was used to configure the Encryption key in the wireless router. http://www.fixya.com/support/r5270415-network_password_network_address For information on securing your wireless network, configuring the wireless router and configuring the wireless card in the laptop/computer, please click on this link and follow my instructions :- http://www.fixya.com/support/r3559128-wireless_router_security

What does it mean by network security key

The name 'network security key' is itself self-explanatory. Every network has a security key and you will need this key to be a part of that network. Just as is the case of any other term that comes from the field of network engineering, there are a lot more details attached to this term, too. So, let us try to understand all the aspects related to network security key

An explanation as to why we need a wireless network security key is not even required. Still, if any one is skeptical about adding any complexity to their available wireless network, just think about it. Your wireless network range can be detected by any other computer with a wireless setup and that comes within the range of the network. So, without you knowing, it's very easy for any user to get connected to your wireless network and gain access to all the data that you intend to share only with those computers with which you have setup your wireless network. So, what is a wireless network security key and how is it useful in such situations?

Well, a network security key or passphrase is something like a password, which any user who wants to connect to your computer will require. But, I think that before we go into the details of figuring out, how to get network security key for wireless computer, we should take a look at the different methods of securing your wireless network

How do i make my unsecured network secure? using linksys WRT54G v8

Access the setup page of router by typing 192.168.1.1 in the address bar.

By default, leave the username blank and the password is admin.

Once on the setup page, go to Wireless. Under Basic Wireless settings, change the default SSID Linksys into any name. This will allow you to easily determine which is your wireless network.

Then go to Wireless Security and enable WEP. Type a passphase and click the generate button. Take note of the Network key. Remember that you will use this network key to all wireless computers.

On your wireless computer, view the available wireless networks or site survey. Select your SSID and enter the network key to connect.

I hope this helps!

What is the security key

You can get the key by going into the setup of the wireless router. That's where you setup a key, or passphrase, and security options for anyone else connecting to your wireless network. Sometimes your router might have a default key on a sticker or in the manual.

Generally you access your wireless routers through the PC that is wired to your router and for setting it up.

You need to first find out how to login to your router's setup. Often it can be using your browser going to 192.168.1.1, but it varies router to router.

From there you can get your key information to be used on the other wireless computers so they can access the wireless network.

Once you have the key, you then go to each wireless computer and go to your Control Panel, then click Network Connections, then look for any wireless connection. If your wireless router is working, your other wireless computers should see the wireless network, then click to connect.
