Hi,

If there's no water entering your dishwasher, check these:

Water-inlet valve
Float switch
Water-inlet valve The water-inlet valve lets water enter the machine. If this valve is defective, you need to completely replace it. It's usually located behind the lower access panel on the left or right side. It's the device with the main water line (usually copper) from the house, a rubber tube to the dishwasher, and two wires attached to it.

Float switch The float switch is a small electrical switch that's located right below the dishwasher "floor." Above the switch, on the inside of the dishwasher, is a plastic cylinder that floats up as water fills the dishwasher. If this switch is defective, or if the plastic float gets caught or trapped in the raised position, the water can't enter the dishwasher. If the float switch is defective, you need to replace it.

Any home type dishwasher fills the lower portion of the tub to a stop point indicated by the float switch. the drive motor in the center operates a pump to force water through the lower [and] upper spray arm. some dishwashers have a rising center sprayer for the upper dish load. I would check the pump assembly for clogging or broken impeller segments. go to             www.partselect.com    to see if you can locate your machine and its exploded diagram.

    So would this be a water intake valve problem, a pump problem, or a possible clog somewhere between the pump and the top port

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, pls try to determine the exact model number. Offhand most causes for no water on the "top spinner" would be:

  • cracked plastic arms, tubings, mounting;
  • slipped, loose, enlarged rubber hose;
  • detached clamps, locks.
On the otherhand, "abnormal sounds", could be:
  • loose. detached component that is part of the rotating assembly.
Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa. Happy Holidays.

It sounds like the water conduct is blocked, and since the sinners work with water pressure the top one would not spin. You will need to open it up, if you would like detailed instructions on how to do this please feel free to ask.

Spinners don't appear to spin

the elements should not be red as this indicates a lack of water to cover the elements
that would account for the spinners not working as the pump will not be pumping water to make them spin
check the water level or call a technician to diagnose the problem properly and quote

check that the thin (about 1.5mm th) plastic washer is present. Without that there will be no water pressure to make it spin

DISHES ON TOP RACK ARE NOT GETTING CLEAN TOP SPINNER NOT SPINNING POSSIBLY NOT ENOUGH WATER PRESSURE?

It would help if you provided the make and model of the dishwasher.
Most likely cause of not getting enough water pressure to top rack is the water diverter may be faulty.

Depending on the model - it is a small ball floating in a vertical channel which alternately opens and closes the bottom and top water inlets to the spray arms. Check part at Repair Clinic after selecting make & model of your dishwasher.

The top water spinner arm fell off, how to get it

This just happened to me. The spinner arm fell off. It left behind two pieces of plastic attached to the roof of the machine: a grey sunburst shape, and within that, a white circle with two prongs. It looks like the spinner arm should snap onto the white circle with prongs . . . but you can't just press it back on, because there is no resistance on the other side and the white circle just becomes displaced instead of snapping together.

But the good news is that the grey sunburst screws on and off! Unscrew it until it comes free from the roof of your machine. Now snap the white circle and the spinner arm together, with the grey sunburst between them. Give it a test spin to make sure it's all together and working, and then screw the whole assembly back onto the roof of your dishwasher.

Apologies for the lack of pictures . . . this must sound crazy to anyone who's not looking at what I'm looking at--but it worked!

Clean on bottom rack but dirty on top

Clean the filter at the bottom of the tub. If it is dirty or clogged the water pressure may not be strong enough to spin the top arm. Make sure also the there is nothing blocking the holes of the spinner arm. If the filter and arm are clear then the pump may be failing.

Wash Arms not spinning --Dishes not clean

Without the model number of your Maytag number, I can not determine if when you order a wash pump motor you also get the impeller.
Sounds like you are on the right path to getting your dishwasher to wash dishes again.
Oh, while you have the dishwasher open, check that the heating element has not failed using a Multimeter.

Good Luck!

Dishes not clean

There may be a couple of solutions to your problem. First, if you are not rinsing the dishes thoroughly before loading, your sump area in the bottom of the machine will get clogged, thus preventing enough velocity to reach top rack. Second, and most likely, your water inlet valve (or solenoid valve) is restricting. You have a timed fill mode through the timer and if the valve is not opening fully, you do not get the proper rate of flow into the machine. Replace the valve and your problem will most likely be solved.
