Kenmore ~ bad smell upon first use of broil function

Hi: I used the broil function (on hi) of my sears Kenmore gas oven. As soon as I turned on the broiler to heat it up, it smelled horribly, a smell almost like melted plastic. The smell has lingered for the past 2 days. Any thoughts on what might be causing this or how I can get rid of the smell?

I am experiencing the exact same smell now -- except that my Kenmore is an electric model.

I have a new GE gas range and the smell is awlful, burns your eyes and lungs. It also smokes like crazy when self clean or broiling. Sears repair guy says its normal and if I had a exhaust fan that was plumbed out we wouldn't notice it as bad. So what he said was no problem. But this is really bad. What can I do?

We've used our new Kenmore electric oven several times but it still has that awful chemical smell when using. Does anyone have a suggestion how to eliminate the smell?

My new Kenmore gas range's oven stinks, too. The flames are so high from the oven that they come up threw vents in the lower oven perhaps 5 inches. It leaves black soot residue from just leaving the oven on a few minutes. It hasn't been used for baking, yet. Should I take it back to Sears or see about my one year guarantee. I do not feel it is safe to use the oven. It would set on fire anything on the lower shelves.

I have the exact same problem with my oven. When I turn on the oven it smells like burnt plastic and the oven flame is way to big. I am using LP and did the conversion myself EXACTLY as the owners manual suggested. I'm wondering if the gas regulator is no good from the factory...

Same problem. Open all the windows and doors to outside, let it burn off for 15 minutes. When done, open oven door to get more smell out. you might have to go through this process 2 or 3 times. The chemical smell is toxic, so go outside for awhile.

If you pull out the drawer at the bottom of the stove, there is a brass fitting that needs to be tightened with a 1/2" wrench.

When I turn on the broil function in the top oven, the bake igniter glows. I checked the voltage in the wires to the broil igniter and there is 0 volts. Is this a bad component on the ECB or can the ECB be...

This is probably a problem with the wiring outside of the control. To confirm this, check for continuity on the bake and broil relays upon activation of the broil function. If the the broil relay activates and the bake relay does not then your problem lies outside off the control board. I have a Kenmore gas range that doesn't light right away when I put the broiler on. I can smell the gas going to the pilot but it takes too long for the flame to light. Sometimes if I cancel the broil...

It seems to me that it is a bad thermocouple. It costs about $5. It senses the pilot flame and then tells the gas to turn on full. BUT if it uses an electric igniter that in itself is the gauge to tell the gas valve to turn on full. And that could be about $30 or more.
I am only slightly confused because you say gas range, but the broiler function is in the oven. So that is what I am believing what you are describing in your problem

I am attempting to pre-heat oven to 400 degrees but oven heat will not raise above 100 degrees

Hi, Upon reading your post I immediately thought of a bad ignitor for the oven, but I am not sure whether you have a gas oven or a conventional electric range. So...If it is gas, I'd suggest replacing the ignitor for the hot surface ignition. If it's electric the bake element may be at fault although most range's use the broil in the preheat, so it should still climb up to 400, it would just take a really long time. Maybe you can clarify if it's electric or gas and I can try to move you forward from there. Macmarkus :)

Hope you find this Very Helpful and best regards!

lb. While the set indicator is flashing

Hi i have a kemore gas range that the bake ingiter or broil won`t

The igniter in the oven does not spark. It heats up and glows red hot until enough current opens the safety gas valve to the burner. It is not associated with the stovetop burners. Replace the oven igniter itself.

Oven won't broil

You probably have a bad broil ignitor. When you turn the oven onb to broil the ignitor on the top of the oven should glow bright orange. If it doesn't glow or glows a dull orange, it is probably bad.

Bottom oven burner will not light

If your Kenmore is like most Whirlpool-built gas ranges, surface ignitors similar to those used in gas dryers are used. These devices have a conductive path fused to a ceramic substrate and are common failures. There are separate units for bake and broil burners.
Check the Sears website under the 'Parts' subsection and enter your range model number. This should bring up a choice of things to do and if you ask for the illustrated parts breakdown, you can see where the ignitor is located, get its part number, and generally order from that same site.
It's mildly disturbing that the range continues to allow gas to flow unignited.
