Have you saved anything new on this formatted hard drive since then?
If you have not, you do have chances to get back all your videos.
What you should do is really simple:
Firstly, stop using this drive immediately in case that any new file would overwrite your original videos and make them gone permanently. So, you should take care!
Secondly, plunge this drive to your computer and prepare to retrieve all your data.
Thirdly, apply a formatted hard drive data recovery freeware to retrieve all your deleted photos back successfully:

I believe this data recovery freeware can work perfectly on your hard drive just in the same way as it completely retrieves all the deleted data of my friend off from his WD drive.
Just give it a shot here:
http://freeware-fix.blogspot.com/2013/02/format-recovery.html
Fourthly, save and back up all the restored videos on a different drive in case of data recovery failure.
Note: Never forget to back up everything important at least on two drives or locations in the future.
Good luck!

Card Data Recovery is good video recovery software. It can recover video with various formats including FLV, MOV, MPEG, AVI, etc. from hard drive, digital camera, digital camcorder, memory card, USB, etc. It has two versions separately for Window and Mac users. You can see its official website here.

Video recovery for Mac (for Mac users)

Deleted videos from harddrive and want to retrieve it

Time Machine would only help you in the future. Is your Mac set up with Time Machine? If so you should be able to get the deleted files that way. Click the Time Machine icon in the dock. Then go back to before you deleted the files, they are probably still available.
If you don't have a Time Machine backup yet, then your best option would probably be Data Recovery for Mac

When you reformat again using the proper disk, you should be ok with formatting. Whether or not you can recover the video is yet to be seen. Regards, Joe

Accidently recorded over important material on a vhs tape. Is there anyway I can retrieve it??

I'm afraid not. When you record, the record heads automatically erase everything that was previously on that tape. So whatever footage was on that tape is gone for good. Sorry!

I accidently reformated a DVD-RW, can i get the information back?

calciummanda,
It may still able to retrieve, depending on how many times it has been recorded over. There are some good disc recovery software utilities out there now that you can load on your computer an then get the image back from the disc. It's not a guarantee that you can get it all or even some of it. Regular formatting does remove the data but the image on the disc is harder to remove, that's why the bad guys usually get their computers and discs confiscated because no matter how many times they erase their hard drives or Rewrite over the discs they can get the original image back (evidence) now you and I and the rest of the public only have access to less powerful recovery software. try this site: http://www.octanesoft.com/cd_dvd_data_recovery.html there are others like it so search for ; DVD recovery software.

My Setting/FORMAT

Basically, the formatting process does not clean up your data, only the address. It is still in your memory card, can be recovered as far as you have not yet "overlapped" or "put other data on" it.
There are some good free software, you can search in google or find it here:
