It sounds like the dryer is kicking the flame out on a hi limit thermostat. you need to check to make sure that there are no blockages in the vent line. if you can start the dryer with the so you can see the burner. If the flame seems to be very wide and not in almost a straight line that would confirm the problem. there should be a hi limit thermostat on the top of the burner and if the flame is touching or coming to close to the thermostat it will cause your problem

Dryer runs ok. igniter glows and lights flame. Flame burns for about 30 seconds and goes out. After a while it does it again. Minimal drying being done.

I have an old 1985 Maytag LDG313 gas dryer. It turns on just fine, but after 5-10 seconds the flame goes out. It comes back on again within a short time, but then goes out again. What part causes this...

It is supposed to cycle on and off. Basically like an oven does to maintain temperature. If the flame stays on all the time, the clothes will burn. So it is designed to cycle on and off. If it wasnt going on and off then you would have a problem. So as long as its drying the clothes, then you don't have a problem.
If there is something else its doing or not doing, let me know and i will help you.

The problem is the dryer coils are failing. They tend to fail as they heat up.There is a video at www.appliancehelponline.com/servicemanual.html this will walk you thru the troubleshooting of these components. It may be a different model but the troubleshooting will be the same. You can also enter your model # for diagrams and illustrations. All parts come with installation instructions. Not all models are available. If you need help disassembling your machine there are videos of this also for most styles.

Maytag dryer not heating

Many gas appliances have safety devices that all need to be functional or you will not be sucessfull in passing fuel to the burner assembly.
There are 2 or 3 electrically controled coils on the gas valve (electromagnetic), these lift a pin in the control and gas flows as requested, these can fail and are realatively inexpensive and easy to replace, $4-25 depending on how many and where purchased.
Other sensors are 2-limit thermostats, radiant sensor, heat sensors, motor temp sensor, humidity sensor, switches (door etc.) all must function in the system to allow correct performance, lastly control panel, also most problems involve cleanlyness of the entire system and all associted exhaust piping.
There are no appliances that are free from maintanance so all require inspections and regular cleanings.
