Hi there, It sounds like your problem is that you haven't hooked up your front USB ports to your motherboard. If you open up your computer case, you should notice some cables coming down from the front USB ports. Those cables need to be attached to USB headers on your motherboard. You should check out your motherboards manual to see where the pins for the USB headers are, and then hook up the cable. My guess would be that no USB device works via the front panel, but after hooking up these cables all devices, including your external hard drive, will. If you need more help/clarification, let me know please! Alex

Ecs gf 8200a usb ports dont work, running vista 64

Could be a bum board or specifically, bum usb controller on the board. Make sure you update your BIOS, and make sure the BIOS says the front USB is activated. You also want to make CERTAIN you have the USB drivers from the motherboard mfr site, because windows native drivers might not be as good as mfr drivers. Also, put a flash drive in the front USB and try to boot from it (youd prolly have to get some linux bootable OS thing to do that with, but im sure its out there somewhere), because if you can boot from a flash drive, it would mean the issue is in the windows OS, and not your bios or usb firmware. Finally, make sure there are no broken USB ports on the board itself, a messed up port on the board might corrupt the rest of them. If all that should fail, you could bypass the problem by dropping an external USB hub on the top of the machine and plugging it to the back. I know thats ugly and causes clutter, but it would solve the immediate issue: the lack of ports. Youd likely be better off with another board though because it seems that the front usb controller is simply not functioning correctly. If you do have to replace the board, get a board from the same mfr with similar features, so that windows vista will be able to start it, or you may have ro reload the OS.

USB port problems

You need the motherboard specs, which you can look up on the internet, based on the maker.
With the USB ports, the front ones often don't include power.
So plug a powered 4 port hub into the front port, and then the hub will supply the power after that.

Pc wont boot up

Simple test to see what could be wrong
remove everything from M/board except for 1 stick of memory and video card or leave it on on board video.
If it boots then one of your other units you removed is fitted wrong replace one at a time testing each time until you find the one fitted wrongly and check it
remeember the hard drive and CD if on same cable should be set to
Hard drive = Master
CD =slave
And the stripe should be toward No1 pin on M/board socket and to the 4 pin power plug on hard drive

Those are hard to find for a mother board unless you know the model number and manufacturer, then you can try going to there web site and downloading it. It all bassically the same except when it comes to the little black Pins you have to plug in for the power switch and the HDD light and the USB ports. Look closely on the board, sometimes there labeled ( PWR SWCH = Power switch, HDD = Hard drive Light in front of case, REST SWTC = reset switch, + and - for the USB pins, generally solid black is Positive.) Now this is relative but not exact, some boards abbreviate or show them differently on the bopard, but look for a group of metal pins sticking up and see if they say what your looking for.

You can try guessing till you get it right, but it takes a while, it shouldnt hurt the board if you wire it wrong, now a days they are built with protection devices to keep you from fryinh anything, but still excersize caution. Everything else on the board is easy, most ribbons and connectors only fit where there supposed to go.

Front Side USN dows not work in ASUS M2N MX SE

The front side port may be a "low power" USB port, it may be possible to "power" this if there is the capacity to connect a power cable to the front panel USB adapter, or there may be an aux power socket to plug into on the motherboard.

Front side USB port is not working

On some computers the front usb ports are like a usb hub, they don't have enough power to power up a hard drive.
