Perhaps, my message has already sent, but I am unable to check. I purchased a set of two new belts vor my Harman Kardon TD420 tapedeck but don't know how to install them. The larger belt (square) is...

Older cassette decks used belts from the motor to the capstan, another from the motor to an idler assy. or tape reels (FF & RR) and another belt driving the mechanical tape counter.

Slow tape speed on reel to reel tape deck

My TC-230 has the same problems and it is mechanical. Actually, its real hard to say what your problem is, but it is most likely the pinch roller is to tight on the piece that is connected to the motor. This extra tension is from a spring inside the machine and, when in storage for a long time with the machine set to stop, extra pressure builds up on this spring. Try leaving it unplugged on fast forward/play overnight. that might help.

I have a pioneer RT-909 reel to reel unit. When the playbutton is pressed, the motor starts the tape then it continually stops. I'm assuming that the motor or belt(?) is bad?

Hello I had the same issue the take up reel tensions need to be adjusted try this thread tape so that there is no slack hold one of the tension guide reels try the right one first hold it so that it is in the 12 oclock postion this is so that it wont retract to the left which will prevent the motor from stopping or going into the cut off position if it continues to play with you holding it in this position the the tension for the reels need adjusting this can be done by slightly turning the blue adjustment knobs that read PLAY / TU 7 FWD 10 one is for 7 inch reel and the other is for 10 inch reels it's the board at the very top of deck when you take the cover off turn them slightly to the left until problem is gone this is what I did and it worked

After much frustration, mainly from working with mainly unreadable prints, I was able to locate the source of MY problem :
There are two .9 ohm power resistors on the power supply board. They are responsible for supplying AC to various motors and relays. One of them was burned open and the other was reading 250 times what it should have. I replaced both of them with 10 amp inline fuses for now. Radio Shack sells 1 ohm 20 watt resistors which should do the job. IDK what the reason is for the low value resistor.

Hi saabangerman

The unit sounds like it has a take up clutch or takeup idler problem. Check all the drive assemblies in the unit. Remove the cover from the front of the transport inside the cassette well, and check the condition of the idlers and reel base drives. The counter belt can also gatherup and prevent the takeup reel from working correctly, or fire the auto stop mechanism preventing it from playing, although that sounds to be ok in this case as the unit will FF and REW ok. The takeup drive is supplied by a different drive idler as it requires much lower and more controlled torque. This unit was always considered to be a great tape deck and is well worth a bit of attention for restoration. You can get a new belt kit for $19.00 from here

I am more than happy to answer any other questions you may have about it, just give me a hoy :) Thanks for using FixYa, If you consider the advice I have given you as sound, a FixYa rating is a great reward for my efforts to help you. Cheers.

HOOKING UP A STEREO EQUALIZER

I bet your receiver has a Tape Monitor Loop and your EQ has one, too.

Run the EQ into the Tape Monitor loop - all out's on one to in's on the other.

Then run the deck to the EQ Tape Monitor, same connection pattern but REC may be substituted for IN and Play(back) for OUT.

The EQ also has a switch that decides if it will affect the Source or the Tape. So the EQ can be used for recording or playback of a tape PLUS any other analog source you listen to.
