I try to video chat but it wont work! this mac desktop has leopard. i'm using an AIM screen name with ichat.
This just started to happen with me and my Dad.
He has an Intel iMac, and I've got an Intel-based Macbook Pro.
We're both running Leopard 10.5.5 and iChat 4.0.5.
We're connecting through Jabber with our gmail accounts.
We've been chatting problem-free for months, and just this weekend, we started running into the problem mentioned above:
I initiate a video chat
My dad responds and iChat indicates that it's starting the video chat session
My dad gets the "There was a communication error..." message first, and then I get it about 20 seconds later.
I read this post on MacYourself that if you're running virtualization software, it might be internet sharing being turned on. I run virtualization software (VMware Fusion) but my internet sharing is off. My dad doesn't run virtualization software.
Any advise on how to solve this problem appreciated.

Re: URGENT MY ICHAT VIDEO CHAT IS NOT WORKING
If you are using VMware Fusion at the same time that you get the problem then it is Fusion. Check by shutting down Fusion then trying the iChat. If it works fine then it's definitely Fusion that is interrupting it.
With internet sharing off as you describe the next thing is to make sure that it is also not sharing the iSight itself. When fusion is running but not windows itself, check the configuration of your windows bootable in Fusion. (You'll have to excuss me a bit as I havn't used Fusion for a bit since switching over to Parallels) Check to see if the iSight is listed among the USB devices.
If it's not there load up windows and check which devices are connected there from the main Fusion Menu or the little icons on the Fusion Status bar. If it's not, double check by right clicking on MyComputer and choosing properties then go to Device Manager and then looking in there for any USB camera devices. If it is, right click and disable it.
OK SO WHAT I DO NOW I JUST FOUND AN EASY WAY TO FIX IT... YOU CAN SIGN OUT AND SIGN BACK IN AND AS SOON AS YOU SIGN IN THE PERSON MUST SEND YOU A VIDEO CHAT INVITATION (AS SOON AS YOU SIGN IN OR IT WONT WORK) AND ACCEPT AND IT WILL WORK...SAME THING CAN HAPPEN IF YOU WNAT TO INVITE THEM THEY SIGN OUT AND SIGN BACK IN AND AS SOON AS THEY SIGN IN YOU SEND THEM A VIDEO CHAT INVITATION AND IT WILL WORK...ITS MY NEW SECRET BECAUSE THEIR IS S PROBLEM WITH VIDEOCHAT ON ICHAT WITH USERS WHO HAVE WINDOWS

Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repair professionals here in the US. click here to Talk to a Technician (only for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need. Goodluck!

There are many messengers one can use on mac,and I am not clear which one you are referring to. I am therefore providing many answers about many ways you can message and videoconference on mac. msn messenger does not have video conferencing for macs.( I also searched for some time to discover this!) You can get msn messenger for mac (the download) but it does not include video chatting!! I am sure of this. There is also a download for Yahoo messenger for mac which includes videoconferencing http://messenger.yahoo.com/mac/, However, Skype is great for mac videoconferencing. (My favorite). Gmail also has something to download for videoconferencing also. http://www.google.com/chat/video. There is also Ichat for macs http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iChat/4.0/en/15610.html and this is the page with info about setting it up, and AIM. And here is a tutorial for ichat and AIM video conferencing: http://www.mvldesign.com/video_conference_tutorial.html. ...... However.... I personally love Skype. Download it at Skype.com, create user name and password and then invite contacts. To activate the cam go to Skype preferences on the top of the screen, choose video and check off Enable Skype video to see your friends and also check off Start Automatically if you want them to to see you (or you can click the icon for the video after you are on a call with them for them to see you only if you want to be seen on that one call!). If you find this answers your question I would so much appreciate a positive vote!
just checking, but did you use ichat? ichat is the chat client for AIM on a mac. they show icons next to the people that you can audio or video chat with. it shows a video camera next to those who you can mutually video chat with. if you click the icon, it makes a video chat. if you were looking to use a service other than AIM, i suggest meebo.com. you just hit the webcam icon once chatting with someone and you are ready to go (assuming you have the isight webcam in your macbook).
hope this helps ;-)
There should be a program called "Apple Remote Desktop". It is a product made by Apple for just this purpose. Information and the ability to buy it are here: http://www.apple.com/remotedesktop/ It also comes with a widget version of it for easier control of remote desktops.
