JVC 48" rear projection AV48WP30 is HAUNTED
Dear Losing Sleep,
The symptoms you're describing sounds like a bad tac switch or two. You might notice a bit of a pattern also, consistent with temp changes. (ie: up in the early AM when house got cooler, and bingo set is on).
It's not an expensive repair. Tac switches are an item under a buck a piece.
However, this is NOT something you want to tackle yourself...
This TV is actually built to self destruct if a less than educated tech opens the back. If you remove the rear cover while the power is on you will destroy all DVI programing inside the DVI (Digital Input Module). The only way to restore the programming is to send the unit to JVC. There is a light sensor inside the TV and when the back is removed with the power on the data is erased from the eprom. You might even take it an extra mile when calling around to find a shop to work on it by asking if they know the correct procedure for opening the back of your TV - - If they do know their answer will be something like this: First turn off set and remove power cord then short pins 1 and 2 on the SB connector of digital input module.
Before replacing the rear panel remember to remove the short on the SB connector. Do not turn power on until the rear panel is inserted into the cabinet. If you have to work inside the set with power on remove the two cables going to the DVI module.
When you find the right shop take the unit in yourself - you'll save a few bucks that way.
Hope this helps.
