Sorry did'nt read the rest of information, check the reostat inside the thermostat , is a fine wire with an adjustment, it has a small arrow pointing to some numbers. ( this is settings for a manual thermostat) on an electronic thermostat you need to check the manuel for that thermostat.

When it call for heat you need a voltmeter to see if you have voltage at your gas valve. Check that first. You could jumper your stat between w and r to see if you have a bad stat. Rus

I have an American Standard gas water heater and the pilot won't stay lit. I've changed most parts but not the thermostat. If i want to change the thermostat, what steps do i need to do?

proubly bad valve, need to determine weather natural or propane contact an American Standard dealer w mod and ser.#'s to obtain new valve. once you have the new part shut off gas, drain tank and replace valve. (Assuming thermocouple has been replaced)

Your safety shut off switch is bad. Usually it is not worth it to replace it, and honestly I have not found a parts store online or in the city that sells the part
