Why is there a loud humming/buzzing coming from speakers?

most of the time this is caused by a bad ground. Check all cabling from and to the right side satellite and the sub woofer.

Altec lansing 221 computer speakers sound solution

Unfortunately it looks like Altec Lansing goofed up on this set and didn't provide a bass control knob. You will need to use some sort of software equalizer on your computer to turn the bass down.

Sounds like a problem in the speakers' internal power supply, maybe a faulty capacitor. Speakers need to be looked at by a technician, or replaced with a new set.

If there is a router or you leave your phone near the speakers that is what is most likely causing the problem. Check to see if anything that gives off a wireless signal (eg. microwaves, cell phones, cordless phones) are nearby, and try to see if moving one of those things fixes your problem.

I need to figure out how to open up the subwoofer for the Altec Lansing vs2121 model. Thank you

theres no on/off button for the subwoofer. once you plugged in the power cable, turn on the speaker system by turning the VOLUME knob on the right satellite until you hear a click sound.
An LED will light on the front of the right satellite when the power is ON. if you still dont hear any sound from the sub woofer then check to make sure that all cables are connected properly and are making a clear connection.

hope this help

Loud humming sound. Blown power adapter transformer. Bought new adapter same humming

The power adapter that blew damaged the amplifier circuits inside the sub (or a damaged circuit caused the power adapter to blow)... in either case, if you have electronic skills and access to a oscilloscope, you can trace the signal on the circuit board. The suspect components to look for would be around the connectors for the power supply to the circuit board.
