Question about Mitsubishi VS-5077/78 TV

Mitsubishi vs-5077 picture turns off

After about 15 minutes of it being on unit will shut off. When I turn it back on it there will be no picture but I will have audio. If I leave that on 1 of 3 things may happen, after a while it will shut off again or the picture will eventually come back on or will just continue to play with sound. Sometimes if I turn the unit right back on after it shuts off the picture will come back on.

When the unit is on the picture is good.

Is this a board that can be replaced that can fix this?

  • mark_mckinno Dec 08, 2008

Is this a board that can be replace instead of trying to solder the current board? If so where would be a good place to get it.

  • mark_mckinno Dec 10, 2008

All the solder joints look fine. I have checked the fuese and they are fine as well

Most probably its a vertical circuit problem.
Eventually you will need to fix this but cost might be up to $350-400

Sounds like there may be a coil or circuit that may be defective, I have seen these where there is as simple as a wire loose, or the processor could be faulty. biigg53566

It is not a good thing to try repairing a projection set on your own unless you are a tv tech or unless the work is a trival repair.

In this case I strongly recommend you leave it to the professionals.  The failure is the high voltage system and its matrix switching mechanism to the three projection tubes.

It will require replacement of several parts within the high voltage area.  An experienced technician will have to get inside and test several components to determine the exact replacement parts.  There are over 100 components in this area and it is not easy to predict the exact ones.  That is why you will need a technical analysis.

Mitsubishi makes a fine product and at the age of the set this is a logical repair to have done. You will get many more years of enjoyment from it.
-------------------- and for the spare parts to get you can check out this link http://www.shopping.com/xPP-projection_televisions-mitsubishi_tv_parts
.but as per the advise the tv board can be easily reparired with the help of a tech nician instead of replacing the board totally

HI
TO REPAIR... 1. Warning. this set can generate leathal dangerous voltages even unplug do not attempt if you have no experence with electronics.
2. Remove the back. there a number of torx 20 screws.
3. what you will see is a number of circit boards There will be one on the right and one on the left. the one on the right is the small signal board. the one on the left is called the power deflection board. it has a large black part with a big red or black wire coming from the top, this is the flyback.Next to the flyback on the right of it there will be three small rectangular componets tan or brown in color. these are fuses. the one in the middle is the fl231 fuse.
4. getting to this fuse can be difficult. these two cuicit boards sit on a tray that is removable. to remove this tray it is pulled out and up. BUt watch the wires.loosen the wire tyes.
5 when you get the tray up the bottom side of the board can be accessed
you will now have to unsolder that fuse. one side of this fuse is under a plastic part of the tray. i have found the easest way is to cut away the plastic to get to it. if you dont want to do this you will have to remove the board. only remove half of the plastic brace
6. REPLACE FUSE RCA PART 259213
7 RESOLDER FLYBACK CONNECTIONS simply heat up and add a little solder
8 reassemble set. make sure you examine the set for loose connections.
9 and remember "BE Careful'

Hi Open your TV unplug wires from mains, Turn the board arriund look for cracked " dry Solder Joints " run through all of it. Look for a IC near your scan coils its mointed to a heat sink 5 to 8 pins on it check for bad solder there. It can also be your HT transistor next to your LOPT Transformer that heats up and then protect.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, it would appear that this is a common fault of some of the Mitsubishi series. Offhand the general term for the fault is cold solder/heat related. This refers to the soldering of a component that loosens up when sufficiently heated.

As stated a common fault, pls reference this FixYa page where a similar concern was attended to. Below is an excerpt:
"a resistor by the high voltage transformer,it has low value and itopens for no reason,he is likely open and does not let the set stayon,if you are familiar with tv service you can replace it and while youare down there check for any over heated areas and resolder themspecially the convergence IC.This resistor is located in the back edgeof the chassis in the board in the right side and it might be hidden bya plastic casing that covers the high voltage transformer."

This of course would require a fair familiarity of electronic components/circuitry and safety procedures, use of a DVM and a soldering iron. It would be to your added advantage access to a service manual or at the very least a schematic diagram with voltage readings.Should you be uncomfortable performing a DIY (do-it-yourself), perhaps your best bet would then be to seek the services of a qualified professional.

Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa. Happy Holidays.

If you are seeking board replacement, you would be interested with a Mitsubishi V14 chassis Board. Unfortunately, this is classified "NLA" which refers to being "no longer available". Best chance would be refurbished or used.

Perhaps component level repair may yet be to your best advantage.

if bad replace the 2 stk convergence ics and fuses...

Thanks.

You definitely have bad solder grounds. I have repaired a few of these. You will need a TV tech pull the boards out and resolder them. The worst board would be the one on the left [signal board, has rca jacks. rf connector]. And they may as well solder the second board. You will have a restored TV when completed. Thanks for asking and show a few hands of support!

I would just replace the TV, the parts are not going to be made to repair this. The set is just to old.

Most likely you have picture tube coolant leakage on the power board. Have an authorized Mitsubishi service shop take a close look.

Bad convergence IC possible - It's cheap if you do it your self, expensive if you take it to a repair shop. My Toshiba finally came on and stayed on after the IC's burned completely up and smoke poured out the back. Then mine stayed on with a distorted image. Tv shuts off

When you let it sit for approx. 15 minutes it will come back on and usually stay on. I've also noticed that the color will fade in and out at times. during 15 mts of your sitting do you get sound & less brightness then problem in video or luminance section. if picture is dim & color will fade in and out at times then possibility of crt is getting less voltage on g2. if set is old then there is a possibility of crt getting weak. but if the above things are not there then problem in power supply. good luck
