Question about Televison & Video

5 Answers

Hi, I recently purchased a Haier flat screen television, model 26 sb. In anticipation of the coming switch to digital broadcasting (we receive signal via an aerial, as we are in a very rural setting),I began looking thru the owners manual for instructions on how to switch from analog to digital reception, but can't seem to find anything. This brings up the question of whether this set actually has on-board digital tuning, or if I will need to purchase a separate converter device?

Turns out I listed the wrong model number. It's actually a model "HL26BG-A"

  • gn_holt Dec 07, 2008

I guess I'm wondering if the set I purchased has a digital tuner on board, as it's only around 6 months old. It seems odd that a TV as new as this wouldn't come "digital ready".

Hi
Unless it specifically states it has an ATSC tuner (not to be confused with an NTSC tuner), or it has a CableCARD slot, it's only has an analog tuner, if it has a tuner at all.

Not a big deal, as long as the TV has some kind of input, you can get a Digital Converter box which will decode the digital TV transmission back to analog and feed it to your TV.

Hi

The set will have a TV/DTV button on the remote if it has a digital tuner at all. Likelihood isnt if you cannot find that button.

If you are in Australia, then there will be a number of cheapo digital set top boxes to do the job for you. **** Smith well one for under $50. Same goes for the rest of the world. Set top digital boxes will be cheap and readily available when it comes to changing over to the digital terrestrial TV. Happy to give you more info, could not find a manual(still lokkong) for your model online.

But then I read that it does have a built in digital tuner.

"HL26B: Enjoy top quality media and entertainment with this Haier 26 LCD television. Youll enjoy free over-the-air high definition Analog and Digital channels with this units ATSC/NTSC tuner"

You may have to setup the channel section presets correctly to get the digital channels up and going.

HIT that TV/DTV button and see what happens. Good Luck :)

If you're in the US, you will no longer get antenna signals because the US has recently switched to digital. The TV you have does not have a digital tuner and you'll need to purchase a digital converter box that converts a band of analog signal to digital.

Dtv ready?

Going to the following link will help you to find out if your television is DTV ready or not:

http://www.dtvtransition.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=51&Itemid=94

Using their online tool, select the Brand (Akai) and the Model from the list. If you cannot find your model in the list (which I was not able to for your television), they are saying that you most likely do not have a digital tuner.

All is not lost, however. As stated on the aforementioned site, you can consider one of the following options:

  • Purchase a digital-to-analog converter box that plugs into an existing television. The boxes, which are expected to cost between $40 - 70 will be available for purchase in 2008. Beginning in February 2008, U.S. households can request up to two coupons valued at $40 each. Each coupon can go toward the purchase of a single set-top converter box that will allow you to continue watching FREE "over-the-air" television on an analog set.
  • Subscribe to a cable, satellite or telecommunications service provider if all desired local broadcast stations are carried by that service.
  • Purchase a new television set with a built in digital tuner.

Listed on the page is further information that may help you to determine the status of your TV:

  • Consult your owner's manual. If that's not possible, you may be able to look up information about your TV set on the manufacturer's website. Or, you can take an up-close look at your TV set. You are trying to find out if your set has an input connection labeled "digital input" or "ATSC" (for Advanced Television Systems Committee, which is developing the DTV format).
  • If you bought your TV set before 1998, it probably doesn't have a digital tuner at all. Almost every TV set made before 1998 was a traditional "analog" set that can't display digital TV signals without either a special converter or a cable TV connection. If you bought a big-screen, projection TV between 1998 and 2004, it's possible there's a built-in digital tuner inside. But chances aren't great. Only a limited percentage of projection TV sets (and generally only those 42 inches in diameter or larger) included digital tuners before 2004.
  • If you've purchased a new TV set since 2004, your chances of having a built-in digital tuner improve dramatically. Starting in 2004, many of the TV sets sold at popular electronics stores have featured digital tuners that will let you receive the new digital over-the-air broadcasts starting in February 2009. But be wary: It's not a sure thing. Even some of the newer TV sets are purely display monitors that lack the internal circuitry needed to pick up digital broadcasts. Usually these sets have been advertised as "HD-ready" or "HDTV monitor" sets. That means they can display digital and high-definition signals, but they need help getting those signals in the first place. You'll still need a special converter or a cable TV connection.

I have 50" PF9966 flat TV , not sure if is HD ready ? 2006 model how do i find out , nothing showing in guide

There are a few things to consider here. First, if you are using cable or satelite, the changeover has no effect on you anyway. If you are using an antenna, the changeover to a digital broadcast signal has already been in place for a while. The set should be able to auto-detect these signals. I believe that most of the models from 2005 on had digital signal tuners available. This is not the same as a "digital" tuner. A digital tuner only means that the stations are tuned digitally but are still analog signals. The changeover will be to change the analog signals to digital ones that require a smaller frequesny band for broadcast thus opening up more space for additional channels.

    Hope this helps,
    Dan

    Picture format

The HD reciever shouldn't be the problem.

If you recieve an image with a 4:3 aspect ratio, the image will be displayed at that ratio on your HDTV unless you specify otherwise. To do so go to your TV's Setup screen

    setup
    Choose picture formats
select smooth wide as your default

***Some digital (ATSC format) stations may transmit 4:3 images in a way that will not allow expansion. You will be unable to adjust the picture format.

    Hope this helps!!!

42" haier plasma with sound and black screen!

Usually you have to be a certified technician of the manufacturer to order and receive those parts. It comes down to insurance reasons because if you were to install them yourself and the TV burned the house down and you were to perish, the company would be liable. As frustrating as it is, you will likely not get the parts. Are you saying that Haier will not provide a service technician for an out of warranty repair or at least point you in the right direction? That's poor customer service and I would think twice about purchasing from them again.

Most likely not. How old is the TV? If it doesn' have a ATSC digital tuner you will have to purchase the digital to analog tuner available at most electronic stores now. Apply for a $40 voucher from the government to apply towards the purchase. Here is a link to apply for a coupon online.

    Digital or not digital

this tv has no digital tuner built in to it. In order to recieve a digital broadcast the tuner must be atsc compliant. The best solution is to get a converter box to decode digital to analog signal.
