Question about Sony KP-61S70 61" Rear Projection Television

Open Question

No sound and dead screen

This Sony rear projection TV is about 6 years old; model kp-65s70. Smoke came out the vents when it quite-no sound and no picture. The red standby light flashes 4 times between pauses. What is my problem and is it worth fixing. Thanks!

6 blinks is usually associated with failure of the horizontal deflection amplifier - which shuts down the high voltage system as well.

The repair requires testing to determine the exact parts that have failed. There are, for example, a few hundred parts and a section of the Jungle IC chip involved. So, repairs could require something as simple as replacing some inexpensive passive components OR as complicated as replacing the jungle chip (very expensive).

most of the time it's the horz. transformer and transistor.

Hello Failrlane.
You have a bad thermal fuse. You must remove the back cover in order to fix this unit. The thermal fuse can be found near the lamp housing. part number for kit: A-1137-954-A

I have a sony 50 in rear projection. 9 years old

Sounds like the CRT tubes are going out which is fairly common on Sony. Inside the back of the TV there are 6 knobs - 2 for each is for focus - dont touch - the other for brightness...turn down the brightness just a hair untill the lines go away.

Screen shakes / jumps vertically on my Sony KP-51HW40

The jitter is called a vertical sync problem. The problem is on the "A" board. It can be replaced or rebuilt but will be quite expensive to service.

Sony rear projection screen is red then tv shuts off

Can be 1 of 2 things. 1st the red tube just needs the voltage to it turned down. In the front of TV (you have to remove the lower front half of TV to access it) is a plastic square with 6 knobs. The from left to right top knobs control focus for blue, green red. The bottom knobs control voltage to each tube in same order (so lower right knob for red) turn SLOWLY to left to reduce voltage until excessive red and lines go away. If you over turn left or right set will turn off. If that does not fix it or if lines reappear then option 2 is that red picture tube is failing outright and needs replacement.
