After intalling 73% of this game, a box pops up saying that "data.big" could not be copied and gives me the option either to retry or to cancel installation. No matter how many times I retry, the file does not copy.

There could be several reasons. Either you cd/dvd drive's lens has to be cleaned, or the cd is in bad condition. Try copying the installation files to the hard disk and then install the game.

If you have the space, copy the entire contents of the disc onto your harddrive and install from there.
That should solve the problem of not finding the files. When done,
delete the temp folder you put the disc contents into, insert the cd
into your tray, and start the game.
BTW, have you checked the disc for any read errors/scratches etc? It
only takes a careless moment to wip out entire sectors of a cd making it
unreadable. you can check the disc by going to EmsaSoft, and trying a
freeware program called Diskcheck from here->
