I have a Denon AVR-4800 reciver and I added ablue ray player and I have connected for the sound optical , I had a dvd hooked up to it before for the sound via coxial which worked fine , by using this optical input I am not getting any sound from my previous dvd player also What gives Les
Do you have your TV hooked up, so you can see the AVR-4800 system menu on its screen (if not, see the manual). You need to go down to the digital input menu item where you associate each component with its input source, whether it is coax, optical 1, optical 2, ..., etc.

you are tring to connect the dvd to the reciever?
if so use the red, green, blue component connections plus optical or coaxial audio from the DVD to the DVD input on the reciever and the red, green, blue component connection from the reciever to the tv
You will need to tell your Denon AVR that you want ANALOG sound from your DVD player now. Depending on what model AVR you have, it may be as simple as pressing a button on the front panel labeled "AUTO". If not, the you will need to go into the menu settings and set the DVD input for digital sound to NONE. Not sure why you would not want digital audio from your DVD player though.
The best possible solution to your problem is :
Connect your blu ray player directly to the HDMI input of you Plasma and watch HD video....
and connect the 5.1/7.1 sound thru the optical or the coaxial link directly to your AVR 3805.
You will not loose anything on the Blu-Ray.
The sound is best processsed by the AVR3805, while the video, which is the real upgrade (BluRay) in terms of resolution of picture would be processed by your plasma.
What might be happenening is the refresh rate for your blu-ray is offsync for your preferred display. You should be able to change it by plugging it into another TV and playing around with the settings. If you have further problems please feel free to post again.
Please post what you do and how you did it.
I look forward to your posts.
