Re: Compaq Netelligent 1017A/B

Does your ISP give you several IPs by default? Does your hub have a built-in DHCP service? If the answer to both of these is no then you won't be able to connect more than one computer at the same time. What you need to do is replace the hub with a combination Firewall/router/switch. In addition to providing the physical Ethernet connections and protection from the Internet this device will have NAT and DHCP services that will create a small home network for you. I connected my modem to my router and then plugged my computers to the router, but only one of them has access to internet.

with default settings on the Router, only one computer will be having access to the internet.
To allow multiple computers to connect to the internet through a single modem, You have to configure NAT ( Network Address Translation) on the router.

NAT basically hides your internal IPS of the computers and goes outside with the IP which you gets from the service provider through Modem.
If you dont enable NAT on the router then you have only one IP for all your computers to go out and only one of them can go to internet with that IP.

I had an idea to use a working addtron 16 port hub as a cheap and simple way to allow our boys access to the net and have control of their time online as well :>) We have a verizon account with an...

You do what you are describing, attach the hub to the router in any regular lan port. Then just plug everything you need to into the hub. Make sure dhcp is on on the router (it probably is) and just set it to automatically obtain the IP on the computers attached. The router can go through the hub (or switch) to give them IPs.
