If the snapping sound comes from the lid it can be one of the springs inside the lids gone out of place.
Depending on the model there may be some danger of damaging the LCD ribbon cable, that usually is rolled inside the lid. However, the cost for fixing the lid is more or less the same of the cost for repairing a broken LCD ribbon cable.
If there is no additional problem, I would leave the laptop like it is, and repair it only if the ribbon gets damaged.
