I tied to use my memory card reader to read my card from my camera, xD, and no go. Says' "insert disk" but have already inserted disk. The manual says nothing about installing drivers. I am a very low-level computer person so please, if you have any help for me, make sure it is in straight-forward English, not computer-ese. Silly me, I thought the card reader would be "just plug into slot and use."

Re: memory card reader on new VGN-SZ480 doesn't work
Yes it is really plug into slot and use but it won't work at all if you won't install drivers. So please go to Sony's website and choose your model there and then download n install drivers. Thats it. Simple or not ?

You can buy a memory card reader (at Amazon.com or ebay.com) and it will have a usb plug. Simply put memory card into reader and plug into computer.
It will work as I just said, but ''technically'' you plug in the reader first into the computer, and _then_ insert the memory card into the reader. (but it will work if the memory card is already in the reader before plugging it in).
You can buy a simple one that only reads the specific memory card you have, or you can buy one that reads ''multi'' different type memory cards.
If your laptop does not have a built-in memory card reader then purchase an USB multi memory card reader that can read a variety of memory cards such as SM/XD, SD/MMC and CF/Micro drives memory cards.
All you need to do is plug in the memory card into the card reader and then plug the card reader into the computer's USB port. The computer will see the memory card as an external memory device.
The Digital Media Slot supports the following digital card formats: ● Memory Stick (MS) ● Memory Stick Pro (MSP) ● MultiMediaCard (MMC) ● Secure Digital Input/Output (SD I/O) ● Secure Digital (SD) Memory Card ● xD-Picture Card (XD) ● xD-Picture Card (XD) Type H ● xD-Picture Card (XD) Type M
