You need a technician. The system could be out of refrigerent, and this causes the low pressure switch to open thereby prohibiting the compressor clutch from functioning. The electromagnet in the clutch could have failed or it could be a switch or fuse problem. My guess is the low pressure switch though.

SOURCE: 98 gmc serria slt air condition clutch not engaging when calling for a/c

Your A/C compressor clutch is controlled by the A/C compressor clutch relay, which is in turn, controlled by the Vehicle Control Module (VCM).

There is no "POWER" for the compressor clutch going into the back of the compressor. The connector at the back of the compressor is the A/C low pressure cutout switch, which only sends a signal to the VCM to let it know if there is enough freon in the system to allow the compressor to run. Poking around on this connector with the wrong equipment or with the wrong hook-up can cost you the price of a vehicle control module (VCM) in the blink of an eye...not good to be messing with stuff if you do not know how it works...could end-up being EXTREMELY expensive!

Your system is most likely leaking, and therefore, does not have enough freon for the compressor to operate without destroying the compressor. In this case, the VCM will not allow the clutch to engage. The fix for this would be to have your system tested for leaks, repaired, and recharged.

Other than that, the only advice I have for you is to scan your VCM for possible fault codes to help pinpoint the cause.

Please note that most generic OBD code readers CANNOT perform this function.

Vt aircon compressor wont engage

check the freon, if there isn't enough it won't engage, could also be the low pressure switch or a fuse.

My airconditioner was working perfectly two days ago, then started blowing tepid air, now it only works well when the temp. is in the 80's.

i think you are low on freon. your compressor clutch wont engage when you are low lift your hood and turn air off watch the compressor and have someone turn on the air and see if clutch engages on the compressor good luck

2008 Honda Civic dx rebuilt AC compressor always on regardless of controls

OOPS ! Now, it sounds like the A/C relay is constantly on. In the power distribution box by the battery, try swapping another relay for the A/C relay (which turns the compressor on), and see if it now stops. If so, buy a new relay. Good luck.

My a/c compressor is only blowing hot air when I turn it on. I know a little about cars so I know it's the a/c but I am not able to find one on any site that may sell used or new.

If all you get is hot air there are several possibilities. The compressor is driven by the serpentine belt and is engaged and disengaged by an electric clutch mounted on the compressor drive pulley. With the engine running, have an assistant turn on the AC while you observe the AC compressor clutch. If the clutch engages, you can be reasonably sure that the system has freon, and the electric circuit is OK. If the clutch doesn't engage, which is the most likely situation, either you are low on freon, the AC clutch relay is inop, or AC compressor fuse is open (blown). A search of Google images will give you the location of the AC relay. You can pull out the relay, carefully remove the cover, reinsert the relay, and engage the compressor clutch by manually closing the relay contacts. Warning: do this only for a second or two in order to see the clutch engage. If the clutch does engage, then you are probably low on freon. There is a safety switch that prevents the clutch from operating if there is not enough freon in the system. Hopefully, this is the case. Go to Walmart and get two cans of r-134 and the inexpensive kit, and following their instructions, charge your system. If this is not the problem, you'll need a set of AC gauges and the skill to use them. Hope this helps. Dano

05 tc. A/C blows hot then cold. Didn't blow cold

The A/C pump ismade of three seperate components. You are correct in it being electrical, to some degree. The compressor is self turnes, & in turning moves the freon thru the condensor, dryer, evaporator, & condensor. With the engine off, you can grab the clutch on the compressor, & turn it manually. Now, to your question. When you turn on your A/C, it sends a signal to one of 3 parts on your A/C compressor. The 1st signal, is a charge to the magnet (not its nomenclature name) that pulls the clutch, quickly, into the compressor shaft, so it can start turning. Now as this signal, is working,on an intermittant basis, 1 your clutch has been damaged, not always engaging fully, causing disc wear. The activating magnet, works intermittantly, this too, strains the electrical wiring, going thru the compressor to the magnet. Now the compressor works, but, 2 components, have gotten very hot, by intermittant action. To remove them, if "fused", will be labor intensive. Thanhaving a "sealed" system, dis-assembled, then re-assembled on a mechanics work table. No matter how hard I try its never completely clean......the repaired compressor can allow harmful contaminates into a system that works, with one part not working. Once contaminates are in the system......all the components can be damaged. The mechanic, is giving you the most cost efficieant repair, that will last longest, with least possiblility of failure.

Where is the a/c compressor clutch electrical wires???? I pulled the compressor & there is absolutely NO wires attatched to it. WTF??!!!! So i need to know the wire routing. I have no idea where the...

The compressor has to be operating when adding freon, some one disconected the wire so it wouldn't burn up the compressor or maybe the wires got tangeled up around the serpentine belt and ripped it off, the best bet is to go to a bone yard and look at a ciera there and grab what you need, your going to need the connector anyways.

Clutch broke on a/c compressor and installed a used one. took it to get charged but still wont work. they said the compressor wouldnt turn. or it may be a fuse but i dont know where the fuse for it is.

If you have no owners manual, can't find fuses or bulbs,
your done.

If they tried to turn the compressor & it is frozen, you
need a new one. Did you try & turn it with a socket?

Does the clutch engage when you power it directly?

so I would buy an a/c recharge kit get the one with a sealer in it follow the directions on package then if your clutch kicks in your good to go... if this don't work or only works for a day or two then need to find where system is leaking by a pro... I would be more worried about your amp overheating ...

The a/c clutch wont engage

Did you try jumping where the Clutch relay plugs into the fuse/relay box ? Pin 87 & 30 are the compressor clutch coil power supply . If you look on the bottom of the relay you will see four set's of numbers 30 & 87 , 85 & 86 . If you take a piece of wire an jump 30 to 87 this will send B+ voltage to the clutch coil engaging the compressor . Is the PCM turning on the relay ?
