Repeated freeze in Vista

I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 which is less than two months old. It ran fine until last week when it started freezing repeatedly. The laptop does not respond to either key or touchpad commands and the only solution is to manually switch it off and on again. I'm running Vista and did not install anything new before the freezes started, nor does it seem to be linked to any particular program or operation - it can freeze when I open something, when I'm in the middle of typing or just browsing files. Sometimes it will run for hours with no problem, other times it will freeze within ten minutes. I've run antivirus scans and it turns up nothing. I'd appreciate any help you can give me.

Have you installed any MS updates?

Does it get "warm" actually "hot"?

    Have you contacted Dell?

    That is still under warranty

This could be related to a weak anti virus scanner. Is it new?
try updating to a newer one. Also if a person downloads and installs excessively then your computer will get slow. Go to control panel: add or remove programs and see what you dont need. also try start: all programs: accessories: system tools: etc In that folder you will find a defragmenter which will speed up your computer by compressing files : will not affect you in ANY way, a system clean up which will empty some temporary internet folders : it will ask which one, and other tools. Do NOT try the one called SYSTEM RESTORE! it will reset your system to the last restore point which could be the way it was when you bought it.

system restore does:
restores your system to the last restore point
deletes file that were not on your system then

only se this tool if you want to delete all programs you have and it will be like the way it was when you bought it : unless you have already created a restore point , i doubt it.

good luck

Press F12 when the DELL logo appears during boot and select Diagnostics from the menu. When the initial memory tests are complete select Express Test and document any errors reported and call DELL with the results.

Dell Inspiron 1524 freezes

Yuo could try running a linux livecd from boot, If that goes well and doesnt freeze it could be that software is killing your machine. if so reinstall windows and install one piece of software at a time until then test the installation to see if it kills the pc. When you find the offending software. uninstall it and never use it again.

Post Boot Freeze

It freezes because one of the programs set to start at boot crashes. To identify which immediately after booting open Task Manager and look at the processes - one should reach 99% CPU use. Once you have found it stop it from launching at boot or just uninstall it.

John,
As the laptop is still in warranty period, let us not open it up and loose the warranty. And also that she has taken additional insurance, you can threaten both o=the parties, ie, Dell and the insurer, that you will take them to the consumer forum (or whatever you have equivalent to that) which I am sure you have in your country. Yes, it is an additional headache, but sometimes you have to tolerate such aches and pains.
