Fridge stopped working, freezer still works

I have a Frigidaire Model FRS26ZRG side by side. The fridge part suddenly stopped working, lights went out and everything. Any ideas? Well I have the same issue, had a repair man come in put a defrost timer in 4-6 weeks ago every thing was going fine, now the freezer is working and the refrige side is at 58 deg again. Looks like it is freezing up again at the top of the freezer side.

HI
If the compressor doesn't run, it is likely that the defrost timer is malfunctioning. This part is located near the compressor. To test the defrost timer:

Step 1:
Unplug the refrigerator.

Step 2:
Disconnect the wires from the timer and timer motor. Remove the timer from its brackets by backing out two retaining screws.

Step 3:
Test the defrost timer with a VOM set to the RX1 scale. Clip one probe of the VOM to each defrost timer -- not motor -- wire, and turn the timer control screw shaft until it clicks. If the defrost timer is functioning, the meter will read zero. If the needle jumps, the defrost timer is faulty. Replace it with a new one of the same type.

Step 4:
Connect the new defrost timer the same way the old one was connected.

To check the defrost timer motor, clip one probe of the VOM to each motor wire, setting the scale to RX100. If the meter reads between about 500 and 3,000 ohms, the motor is functioning properly. If the meter reads higher than 3,000 ohms, the timer motor is faulty. Replace it with a new one of the same type. Connect the new motor the same way the old one was connected.

    The limit switch is found only on frost-free refrigerators and freezers. Its function is to keep the defrost heating element from exceeding certain set temperatures. If a refrigerator has lots of frost in the freezer compartment, the problem may be the limit switch. However, other components -- the evaporator fan, the defrost timer, and the defrost heater -- can cause the same problem. Check these for malfunctions, as detailed below. If these parts are in working condition, the problem is most likely in the limit switch. Don't try to fix the limit switch yourself; call a professional service person for replacement.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, it would seem that there are two (2) users with the same issue.

Offhand, there would be a couple of possible faults to my knowledge that would result to the symptoms as you described. Among them (but not limited to) would be:

  • fan/blower and its associated components;
  • thermostat controller and its wiring;
  • logic/controller board.
Additional indicators that would help narrow down the problem:
  • does the fan spin and is the air flow strong and cold;
  • if the thermostat is accessible and is a 2wire version, try jumping the wires bypassing the thermostat. Pls be careful and insulate the jumper/terminals as they would pose potential electrical hazard. Alternately, you can try a continuity test;
  • try a reset, unplug from the mains from a considerable length of time with provision to transfer food items to a secondary fridge unit.
A postback for an update of any developments (or even the lack of it) would be appreciated.

Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa. Happy Holidays.

    Of course first to check for a completely dead unit would be the breakers and the outlet.

As per ur prob light going out is a separate problem. If the freezer is still working and the fan in the freezer operating check for frost on the back wall. If there is frost on the back wall you have a defrost system problem.
Possible open heater, bad timer, or defrost thermostat. If the freezer is not working check for power to it. Reset the breaker if necessary.
If the light went out because of some power loss the freezer would not be working

    else it could be bad compressor, five year warranty, a defrost problem, evap fan, light staying on inside.

    if not you will need to put the defrost timer into defrost, its at the bottom left front side behind the kickplate grill, you will see a little dial that you turn clockwise till it clicks and the refrigerator will stop running, then it will be in defrost, if your defrost heater and defrost thermostat are good, then the heater will start getting hot in a few minutes.

My admiral fridge freezer suddenly stopped working -

I took the time to look up your Model # and you do have the right board. Jazz 14 Should just be a revision one higher than your origional. Describe to me exactly what happens when you try to program it. You may be missing one little step. Make sure you are doing every step exactly right. I too can miss one little confirmation stroke and it seems like it wont work. I Can email you the tech sheet for your model. This will show you how to test all the sensors, and the damper to determine why the FF side is getting too cold. I will also help on my end as much as i can
