SOURCE: HP Monitor goes into sleep mode
Problem of monitor sreen going black in 5-10 secs is generally dry solder joints around the inverter transformer on the inverter PCB.

I have a LCD panel it is connect to to the LCD. I need to change a setting on the computer to make it stop going into sleep mode, however, now that it's in sleep mode, how do I get out of that so I can make the change?
SOURCE: disable sleep mode
For XP: Start>Control Panel>Power Options>Click the options you would like under the Power Schemes/Advanced and Hibernate. Vista may be a little different but it is still under Control Panel and Power

Sounds like your monitor is not processing the resolution signal from the graphics card. Reboot the computer in "safe mode with networking", from there you can play around with the resolution, start low resolution and work your way up to test the monitor.

I assume you have already tried this monitor with other PC and get the same result, just want to narrow down the problem before taking thing apart.
Most common failure in the LCD monitors are bad capacitors (bulging top/seal or leaking) in the power supply, failed inverter circuits (blown fuse, shorted transistors, shorted/open transformers), bad lamps (poor solder connections or worn out lamps). You will need to open it up and inspect the inside, see example of failed HP and other monitors to get some ideas what goes wrong: http://s807.photobucket.com/home/budm/allalbums
Post back what you see inside so we can guide you further.
