I have the same problem with the sound constantly cutting in and out. I noticed though the longer it goes on the longer it will stay out. It is hooked up with a digital audio cable and has been working for at least 6 months now. I have had it since 2002 so I don't know if it is just past it's time?

Are you useing a digital audio cable when its cutting on & off? How long between the on & off? I have the same problem when I use a digital audio cable or a coaxial audio cable from my DVD player. To use the surround (6 CH) feature you need to use the 6 channel RCA jacks and if what ever your hooking up dosent have the RCA outputs your out of luck. My DVD player does have the 6 channel outputs and they work but the digital cables won't work. What are you connecting to it? I think something is wrong with the digital circuit board in mine, I would like to replace it and see. Reading your manual will help understand the 6 channel RCA and fiber optic digital cables. I hope any of this helped.

I Have am RCA RT2280 that has no power accept for the led on the power button, Any Ideas?

My RCA 2280 receiver went out on me one day. I thought I'd have to take it to the shop. But before I do that I'll check the fuse because I took it to the shop once before and the repair man said that it was the fuse, he replace it with a new one. So I thought that I would take a look inside first. I took the cover off and looked around and notice that the fuse looked loose. It was loose. I just push it all the way in, replace the cover, plugged it back up and it worked.
As far as the on and off problem goes (which happened to me too) the speaker wire coming from one of the speakers to the back of the receiver were crossed, over loading the system causing it to over heat resulting in it shutting off. I found that the wire was going from red to the gray instead of red to red and gray to gray. Once I rearranged the speaker wires I had no more problems and that was years ago. I haven't had anymore trouble sense. I've had the receiver maybe 12 years now.
Except for today with the Dish Network 20.0 IR 155681 remote control for the 722k HD/DVR. I tried everything in their book but I can't get it to control the RCA 2280 surround sound volume. Anybody gotta clue? I would surely appreciate it. Good Luck.

No sound from tv, dvd, cable. Speaker test does work. Sound stopped suddenly when channel was changed.

What does this mean: "when channel was changed"? TV channel?? Would that mean a remote command was issued? How about FM (no external cabling)?

I have an lg lcd mod#lc427d hdtv how do i hook up an rca rt2280 system to it. i have a dvd player hooked up to tv now using hdmi cables, rca av reciever does not have them...

You can check your dvd player for a coaxial or an optical sound output, then you can plug it directly to your receiver. Those two are the best options after HDMI. Another option is A/V RCA type cable, you´ll need 3 stereo A/V wires, in order to connect the 6 channels. Remember to uncheck the HDMI sound output option on the DVD menu.

RCA 2280 Optical Input w/PS3

The only optical option is through the satalite function. After I hooked up my xbox 360 with optical audio, I pushed the SAT button on the front of the RCA receiver then turned the multi jog wheel until it read "optical" out came surround sound. I hope this helps you.

RCA RT2280 Fuzzin' Out

These receivers are know for having some bad solder connections on the main board around the heat sinks that the amp IC and the voltage regulators are attached to.

The symptoms you describe would point to that as a very likely source of your problems. That is for both of your problems.

With broken solder joints on certain components, the unit may play normal for a while and as the solder heats up it will expand and loose it's conductivity and bingo, problems with any number of things.

With heat stressed solder connections, not broken ones, the solder will conduct ok for a little while sometimes and as it heats up it gets less conductive. Many times heat stressed solder is less conductive than normal without heating up.

You can identify the heat stressed solder visually. It will be very dull, not shiny and silver like normal solder. It even gets a grainy texture to it.

Broken solder is recognized by the rings around the components lead that it is solder to.

If you have some decent soldering skills or know somebody who does, ask them to reflow the solder on the main board that looks like it could be bad. Just make sure the unit has been unplugged a while before you try it.

The bottom panel comes off of this unit if I remember correctly, or there is an access panel right under the problem area. I don't remember ever needing to take the board out of the unit.

If this information was helpful to you a good rating would be really appreciated.

One other thing you need to know is that if you need to get parts for this unit, you are out of luck. RCA no longer sells parts for the audio equipment they sell. They do have a shrinking supply of some of their parts, but once it runs out thats it for RCA audio parts.

I know this because I work at an authorized RCA repair center.

RCA RT2280 surround sound mode button wont select 5.1 dolby digital mode.

I had the same problem and this is what I did to fix it. Assuming that all of your equipment is powered on, (tv, blu-ray/dvd, rca receiver) you'll need to go into your dvd players audio menu and select the dolby digital audio.
Once you do this, the digital signal is sent to your receiver from the dvd. The receiver should automatically set itself to the dolby digital preset. If it doesn't, press the surround button until you reach it. I found part of this information here. And the rest was personal experience.
Also, it depends on if the disc format is in dolby 5.1. I hope this helps you.
