DVD RW, My system says that it is operating ok but when i put in a DVD and try to play it it says there is no disk in the player. I can hear the drive spin up so i know there is power to it. Is it my...

Best thing to do is to try run something bootable from laptop start-up. For instance Windows installation disc or some kind of testing software disc. If it boots up, then your Operating System needs to be re-installed or maybe that disc is damaged. You could also try that disc on another computer to be sure that disc is OK or unreadable.

Have a toshiba laptop U305 that does not play dvd/cds

Unfortunately the laser for the dvd from the optical unit has died - unfixable, the dvd writer must be replaced. Fortunately this is a cheap , easy fix.

Boot Disc's Not reading, Dvd rom help? or Xp/vista help?

How did you made it boot to the disc? if you used keystrokes to do so, it would be better if you go into your BIOS and set the boot priority making the dvd drive as priority and see if it is gonna work that way. If it does'nt you need to be concerned about the drive itself, it might be having problems as well.

Acer Aspire 6930 won't play Blu Rays

Your DVD is not Blue Ray capable. You would need to purchase a Blue Ray DVD player for your laptop, just having the software does not allow you to read them.

    Loading some DVD's

I have seen this same thing on a laptop. DVD drives use two lasers. One for CD and one for DVD. As you noted CDs are just fine and so is that laser. Although I believe the DVD laser is intermittent. And it will work with some DVDs and not others. Yes I have seen this before. What will probably happen a few months down the road is it will stop reading all DVDs.

It isn't economical to replace the failing laser. It is far cheaper to just replace the whole DVD drive. Lasers are like light bulbs. Some seem to last forever and some seems to burn out right away. Generic DVD replacements will generally work, although the face plate might not fit.

Another option is to get an external DVD that plugs into the USB port. And those Slimline models are really small (same size as laptop CD/DVD drives) and you can use them on other computers too.

    DVD not working

Does any other DVD play? If so, your drivers are fine and the disc may be unreadable due to dirt on the lens, scratched too badly, not in the correct format, etc. Is there any error message? When you put the disc in, does the DVD drive icon change? You can also try putting the DVD in another DVD player to see if it plays in that one.

    Drive cant write any disc

If the unit was working ok and suddenly the unit stop to read the blank disk, the problem could be related to a dirty lector (need to clean) or unit firmware (need to be updated)
In that case you can update your firmware here:

    http://drivers.softpedia.com/progDownload/Matsushita-DVD-RAM-UJ-840S-104-Download-14615.html

    ***************************************************************************************
    Remember

    1) You have to use a blank "recordable disk" to allow your drive write a disk
    2) Not all disks are compatible
    3) Try differents brand
    4) Clean your drive lector
    5) Update your firmware
