Question about Refrigerators

Fridge not cooling

Fridge was in garage working perfect. We moved it inside, did not lay down at all, fridge remained upright, only had to move it about 8ft. Now that it's inside the freezer works perfect, but the fresh food side isn't getting cool. It was unplugged when we moved it for approx. 10 min at the most and like i said never layed on side or nothing. Now it's not cooling!!! Please help.... Looked at fan and nothing is bent or rubbing, coils underneath are not hot or warm at all. Model # 106.56542400

Hello.
The first thing you need to do is take out the bottom drawer in the freezer and look into the slots in the back panel. Make sure that you can see silver coils, and not a bunch of frost. If there is, then you need a new defrost timer, defrost heater, or defrost terminator.

If all looks ok then make sure the fan in the freezer is running. (You may have to push the door switch if yours has one.) If the freezer fan isn’t blowing however, the freezer will be warm at the top and cool at the bottom, and you fresh food compartment will be warm.

Another thing to make sure is that the light it turning off when the door is closed. Again you would have to push on the door switch. I was amazed to learn when I first started this line of work, that even a little light bulb can make enough heat to cause a problem.

These are the most common issues.

Let me know if everything looks ok and I will go over some other things, as the list of things that can go wrong with a refrigerator is fairly long.

Tip

Moving a fridge or laying it down.

Moving a GE, Hotpoint or some Kenmore refrigerators can be more of a job than you dreamed.

Did you know that the defrost heater of some of these models are made of glass and wire? They really are! Glass and wire!

A little bit of a rough ride or a bump can break it. So if you move a fridge and 2 weeks later it does'nt work you probably have broke the defrost heater.

Thats not all! Surprise surprise here is the big news. YOU CAN LAY A FRIDGE DOWN TO MOVE IT. Who would have guessed right? How many times have you heard that myth. Plenty I am sure. But its true you can.

Here is what to do. After you are finished with the move and the fridge is in the upright position,,,leave it up for about 6 hours before plugging it in which will allow enough time for the oil to flow back to the compressor so it starts pumping freon while the tubes are clear and you will be good to go.

Thats it,,,,I am sure this will help someone.

I am moving and need to lay the fridge on its side, but have been told you cannot do so, is this correct?

You do not want to lay that refrigerator on its side because the refrigerant will leave the compressor and fill the system with liquid refrigerant where it should only be existing in a gaseous state, and if the refrigerator is tilted far enough over or lay-ed onto its side then the refrigerator will have to stand up-right and un-plugged for at least 24 hours before the liquid refrigerant will settle back down where it belongs, and then the refrigerator should actually function again if there was no other damage caused when moving the unit.

I moved a perfectly working KitchenAid fridge from inside the house to the garage and now it blows the ground fault breaker the second it is plugged in.

Almost definately, there is a wire or more accidently pulled loose while carrying the fridge.Check where the cable enters the fridge and the surrounding area.

Moved fridg to new house pluged it in dosen,t get coled at all!!!

If you had to lay the fridge down to move it? Then you have to let it stand upright for at least 24 hours before you can plug it in and use it or it won't cool, as oil will get into the coolant lines and foul the works.
If you didn't have to lay it down, then check for a switch and or harness under the front grill that may have got bumped out of adjustment of knocked the plug off.
I hope this helps you, and good luck.

I just moved my dads fridge to my house and after about 7 hours I smelled a burnt plastic smell. I smell it on and off.The fridge is still cooling. When i moved it I layed it down.

When a fridge is layed down the oil in the compressor will flow into the refridgerant lines and will have to be stood upright until the oil can return the the comrpessor. It may be too late for yours but I would try cutting it off for a day before trying it again. This may not be the cause of the smell so keep a nose on that and try to locate exactly where it's coming from.

Fridge not cooling

Hello.
The most common thing that happens while moving a frig is when moving it they put the dolly underneath the condenser fan housing and bend it into the fan causing the compressor to overheat before it has a chance to cool down everything. If this isn't the case then I will send you a list of things to check out. Let me know.

Fridge and freexer are not working

the fridge has to be set upright for about 24 hours before using again.  we set our fridge on its side to move and it did not work after we got to our new place.  we ended up getting rid of it.  our repairman said if we had let it reset itself, fluids and all, then plugged it in - it would have been fine --after 24 hrs.
