Self-winding Seiko watch stops ticking.

Take it in to a watch repairer. Sounds like the self-winding spring is worn if not so then the watch repaier will find the problem. There is nothing you can do so do not attempt to fix it.

Getting a watch to start

Does it have a small plastic piece that should be discarded behing the crown? Remove it and push the crown in. Should start if it is a battery powered watch. If it is a windup or automatic you need to wind it first. Move the crown back and forth between between your fingers and give at least a dozen winds. If it is Seiko automatic you can't wind it. You must wave it sideways several times to wind, maybe a couple of minutes. If it is a Kinetic, do the same.

My 5 year old Seiko kinetic (divers') watch: beyond shaking, is there a way to wind it? I used to be able to press the power button and see the second hand advance 20 seconds. Now I never have enough...

I am going to make an assumption or two. One is you wear your watch regularly. At least every other day. Two is you are not sedentary. Try wearing the watch for three days. If the power indicator doesn't read at least 15 to 20 you have a bad cell (capacitor). If it does charge up to 15 to 20 then see if it lasts very long. Should last a couple weeks or more. If not then you still have the same problem. You can also go to a watchmaker and he will have a piece of equipment that can charge your cell in 3 1/2 hours. Then if the cell goes dead rapidly he/she will replace it. Should cost around 50 or less.

Runs A Few Seconds And The Stops

It sounds as though it is not winding up. There is often a manual winding facility which you can use but you need to check with the instructions for your watch.

If you do not have instructions you can get them from their web site "Seiko.com".

Click on "support" and then on " scroll down the page and you will see a list of watches. Download the one for your watch.

Can be fixed in less than one week and cost is less than $80. See web site for Timelywatch repar.com. They guarantee their work. And yes, the old capacitors are only good for 3-4 years. All replacements are now with a much better, long lasting Lithium Ion battery.
