Question about Vertex FNB-33, YAESU,FT-11R,FT-41R,FT-51R, 4.8v 1700mAh NiCd 2-Way Radio

Powering the Yaesu FT-11R

Normal 0 I have downloaded the schematic for the FT-11R. It shows a "Contact Unit" as the interface between the rest of the radio and the supplied battery which is 4.8 VDC. The radio is supposed to be able to operate up to 9.6 VDC.

The problem is that the supplied battery pack and the radio have 4 pins going from the radio to the battery pack. Clearly, one pin is + 4.8 VDC, one is ground. The problem is what is the function of the other two pins?

One is labeled "Battery Select" and the other "Adjust" on the schematic, but what do these really do?

Has anyone simply hooked up the + and minus leads to a bench power supply without causing any harm?

P.S. I can forward the schematic of this interface unit as a .jpg file attached to an email if this will help respond to the above question.

The battery select determines whether you're using a NiCd or Alkaline battery, I believe the "adjust" is used to put the radio into service mode. If there's not an "auxiliary power input" you can hook up the bench supply to, check the battery output for the voltages and polarities, and hook up your supply accordingly.

figured out how to solve this, with the radio off, push and hold both up and down scan buttons, while powering the radio on. This will fix the problem.

SOURCE: I have a Yaesu FT-51R purchased in mid-year 1995.

Hello,

Yes, it is possible to use the FNB38 NiMH batteries or any other battery as long as it is the same size and the same volt. Once the battery can fit into the radio and charger and has the same volt, then it is definitely going to work.

I hope the above is clear and understandable, if not, please let me know.

Good luck.

Any ham radio store should be able to obtain these - if they are still in production / stock by Yaesu. Ham Radio Outlet aka "HRO" has stores nationwide and can ship direct.

I hope this helps!

Yaesu FT-11R amateur radio squelch problem

It sounds like perhaps you have CTCSS turned on so it's blocking received signals that aren't using sub-audible tones. Make sure the "TSQ" indicator is not showing. Most Yaesu radios have the SQU or "T.SQ" option easily found in their menu structure..

FT-11r no longer powers up with a known fully charged battery ? The battery was left in the unit a couple of months with a discharged battery. Could this have damaged the unit ?

It's unlikely leaving the battery pack attached ruined the radio, unless it leaked and corroded the contacts. Be sure they're clean and bright. Double check to be sure the battery pack really is charged to rated voltage.

I have an FT-51R and when I try to turn it on with a full battery nothing happens

Carefully clean the contacts on the battery and the radio. The contact area is so small that the slightest amount of oxidation or corrosion will prevent the radio from working.
