Microwave runs intermittently...heating seems to shut off when warmed up and runs again when cooled down...is thermostat defective or does it need to be adjusted?

Some ovens have a thermal protector on the magnetron. It opens if the magnetron gets too warm. Or, sometimes they will open at too low of a temperature. Another possibility is that air flow to the magnetron for cooling is bein restricted, or the cooling fan is defective.

Microwave runs good for short heatups. But long or repeated heatups the microwave gets warm and shuts down. Will restart after cool off.

My microwave used to continue making sounds even when item was taken out and cooking time completed. I thought this was part of the mictowave cooling down (sim to fan oven). However, this noise has now...

All microwaves do have a "transmitter" tube called a magnetron. It has to put electrical power into microwaves. To do so it gets warm or even hot. As soon as the transmitter is to hot, it must be cooled down. Most of the time it can be cooled without a fan. But as long as the thermostat indicates it is to hot, the system will cool. Even when you switched the system off. Don't unplug the microwave when it is still hot. It could damage the magnetron.

If you try to heat something for a minute , the microwave will turn on for about 15 seconds then shut off . It doesn't even seem to warm the food.

It may need a reset. You can do that by unplugging the power for a minute or two, then plugging it back in and setting the clock.

If it still fails, you may have a failing cooling fan or a problem on the control circuit board.

Ge pvm2070smss shuts down

It may be a noisy magnetron if the failure occurs in a second or two of hitting "Start" to begin cooking.

See this FixYa solution. even though your model number is different.

Otherwise, if the internal cooling fan is not running when you are cooking, it will shut down after 30-60 seconds or so and stay off until it cools back down.

Microwave felt very warm on top. after cooling

That's often a sign of impending failure of the magnetron or a failed or failing internal cooling fan.

One should never leave a microwave unattended while cooking, and it's even more critical any time there is a problem or potential problem.

With the model number, we can offer more specific advice or an estimate.

But since FixYa does not notify us of follow-ups, you will need to post a new help request.

Overheating bottom Kenmore 66560652000

Hi,

I would suspect that when the microwave oven was on the table the vent or air openings were restricted by the table. Without free flowing air the control and other components could build up heat. It is doubtful that you built up enough heat to damage anything as this unit has more than one over temperature safety devices built into it.

That being said, the excess heat could weaken something internally especially on the control that would cause it to fail sooner than later in life.

My advice would be to leave it unplugged until it is mounted back on the wall per the instructions and use it then as normal. If it fails in the next year or so replace it at that time.

Microwave problem

Could be that magnetron is not receiving adequate cooling thus causing thermal protector to open. This is mounted on the magnetron.
