Question about Dell Latitude D620 Notebook

1 Answer

Blue Screen I have had this problem for a while and vista has finally told me the problem. Every time I remove the secondary battery and put in the DVD Burner it will blue screen. It sounds like it is battery problems but i am not sure. I have eliminated some possible problems I have reinstalled windows vista and this is a clean install, I have replaced the hard drive, Memory, Keyboard, and wireless card all for upgrades or other problems.

Yes this is fully up to date with Windows and drivers. It does have the latest bios to allow installing using the Dell Vista DVD. One other person I work with does have the same laptop and everything was the same except hard drive size, but his drive was a duplicate of mine and he does not have this problem. This makes me belive that it is the battery or the drive.

Ok I did what I do to have this problem slowly to isolate the problem. I removed the battery, no problem. I inserted the DVD Burner, no problem. Put a disc in the drive, it begins to sound like it is reading, then it will blue screen. I have and still use the drive to install software. After it has restarted it will not cause a problem. I do know that this is not the orignal drive it was changed because when installing vista, it would not load the driver for the orignal drive; I do not know why.

Ok I looked on the site and it turns out that the drive I have is not on the list for firmware. I tried another drive (one on the list) and had no problems but even chage from the drive on the list right to the one having the problem and it still happens. I just have to make sure to get one on the list to end the problem.

Sounds like Vista may be having a problem with hot-swapping the battery and optical drive. Do you have the latest BIOS for your system (A10)? Since it's a clean install - have you downloaded all updates, checked for updated drivers, etc.?

Do you get the blue screen when you remove the battery or only after you insert the DVD drive? If not check to see if you get the blue screen when just reinsert the battery then try removing and reinserting the DVD drive. This will show if the problem is the battery, drive, or just the OS dealing with the bay.

Check Dell Support to see if there new firmware for your drive.

You can go to BIOS and run the HDD self test. Seems your HDD is dead. If its passed then its fine, if not it will give you a error message.

You need to purchase a new HDD.

HP 550 will not get to the log in stage

This is a known issue with Vista. Microsoft has not documented a solution but SP2 for Vista addresses this issue.

You can try running chkdisk from the repair console (insert Vista installation DVD and select repair).

If you have backup CDs or DVDs, try to restore your system.
I nothing helps, you will have to manually back-up your data and reinstall Windows.

To back-up your data you might want to remove the hard disk and connectit to another working PC as a secondary hard disk. Then simply boot up,copy your data and plug the hard disk back in.

You can download theVista SP2 from here. Also download and install SP1 before installing SP2.

Thank you.

OK, first of all the blue screen appears only when windows is loaded so that means that you are still not rebooting from the cd, Turn on the computer and immediately press either the F1 key or the F2 key at one-second intervals to enter the BIOS setup utility. As the Guys at say it.
Then go to a screen called boot sequence which should allow you to choose from where the computer is going to restart from. make sure that the CD drive is first on this list then SAVE AND EXIT. after that, the windows vista cd should work.
make sure you press whatever key it wants you to press to enter to windows vista.

So.. you can select safe mode? Or you turn it on and it is resuming into the blank screen?

If the latter. Unplug the power, pull the battery out for 20 seconds or so. Then put it all back together and try booting up.
