Question about Sony Projector Lamp for VPL-HS51

1 Answer

Sony cineza vpl hs51 projector won't project

With less than 1000 hours on my lamp, it won't project with enough light to hit the screen. If I hold a card up right in front of the lens, I can see that an image is getting through, although to blurry to read anything. If the lamp needs replacing, would you be able to see anything? I'd rather not replace the lamp, if it's another problem. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Something I found interesting from the internet - lamp life isn't when the bulb dies, but when a bulb has lost 10% of its brightness - so you might well be able to reset the timer and get much more use from the bulb - the image just wont be as bright.

The lamp may not have been changed - just the timer reset - How many hours has the lamp really done - 1000, 3000, 5000?
If you know that the hours are genuine, then was the quartz bulb contaminated with a touch of oil from skin contact?
This will substantially shorten lamp life, due to the quartz going milky and opaque.
The easiest way to check, is to pull the lamp and have a look at the bulb.

If need be replace the lamp and reset the lamp timer.

These instructions are for a Sony Cineza VPL HS3, but may be the same for the HS51
1st thing to check - is the cover properly/completely closed - this can stop the projector from working.
Connect the power and set the projector to standby mode.
Press these buttons on the remote control in this order, for less than 5 seconds each.
Reset - Left Arrow - Right Arrow - Enter

My projector shows a blue tint to the right of the screen. I am afraid that it might be the blue LCD panel gone bad. What might the diagnosis be? Sony VPL-HS51

Does the blue tint show up as small rectangular pixel shapes when you get up close to the screen when focused properly. This would indicate a blue LCD panel fault. If it's fuzzy then possibly a blue polarizer overheating

Blue Haze on screen Sony cineza vpl-hs50 projector

I also have the same problem -- the fix is to replace the optical block ( Internal lamp engine ) which is a $1,100 part. I just purchased a used projector for half the price of the part.

Blue "Haze" at top of screen

My VPL-HS51 just started doing the same thing. There's a lot of similar reports out there and they all end up at the same bottom line - the problem is due to a design defect in the 'prism block' (LCD panel) and the only option, other than to throw it away or sell it for parts, is to pay Sony about $2300.00 to fix it. Good luck!
