The plastic spring loaded clip broke. Can it be repaired? If so, where do I send it.

Hi, I actually rebuild these mics and upgrade them. I'm an expert in the vintage 55's of all era's and the newer. If you are just looking to go back with the stock element of a 55sh2, or looking to upgrade your 55 vintage or new, with a SM58 a Beta 58, or a 87 Beta, I do all of that. All repaires from Hard mounted XLRs, screens, to polishing the surface back to new, or upgrade kits that you can put in yourself with my pictured instructions. Check out my web page at Mutantmics.com or google search Mutant Mics or conatct me directly at [email protected]

Hi,
Maybe your battery is loosing contact, one of the most common problems with the older Shure models.
If there's a 9 volt battery in it, just bent the clips a little or put something behind the clips so that the contact is for sure.
regards,
Gerard

As you discovered, the rattle problem is due to a broken plastic stem that is designed to hold a metal pin, which in turn keeps the washers in place. I feel like the plastic stem is a weak link in the design of the mic. I dropped my Beta 58 once (not even hard enough to dent the grill) and snap! The mic sat unused for several years, until I recently worked up the courage to take the thing apart. A quick and easy solution to the rattle problem is to simply remove all of the washers, the broken piece of stem, and the metal pin. With a broken stem, they aren't doing you any good any way. As far as I can tell, the pin and washers are just there to keep the capsule from sliding out. The rubber housing and c-clamp hold everything together pretty securely, and I haven't had any trouble with since removing the washers, etc. Of course, I'm pretty careful with it now. If you want a mic that can stand up to abuse, get a SM58. Of course, you won't have the clarity of the Beta. As far as the tiny wires go, find someone that is handy with a soldering iron.
