You might be better off calling Canon's tech support directly. It sounds like something is very strange, either the printer or your approach; they may be able to talk you through it better. There should not be more than one way of putting the cartridges in.
It may be you've got the cartridges in correctly but are having other problems.You can look on Canon's Web site for a firmware upgrade for the printer ... but I'd call their tech support first.
