Hi, I recently bought your 750GB My Book external drive, which I have connected to a Macintosh G4 desktop computer.  The computer does not recognize the external drive now, although I was previously able to back up files.I have tried restarting and various USB ports...  What do you suggest?

I have a 750Gb Seagate FreeAgent drive. It worked fine until recently. However it now does not appear on the desktop of my macbook but it appears in disk utility. I have tried to repair it but it just says the volume appears to be ok and the drive still does not appear on the desktop. I have tried restarting laptop and hard drive but no luck. Is there anyway to get access to the what's on the drive as I don't want to have to erase everything on it?

Be sure to plug the USB connector and the back of the CPU. Then go to Application folder if your running on OS X. Locate the disk utility, then double click it and see if your external drive have been detected. If it is detected try to repair it. and then thats it

I would suggest copying the data to your My Book as an interim step before copying to the second drive. Copying directly from one removable media device to another will necessarily move the data to your computer temporarily anyway, so there is no disadvantage to simply using your My Book as a middleman in the process.

My external hard drive wont conect to my computer.

Is this a new drive? has it worked before? the usual sequence is to connect the external drive to a power source first, and then connect the usb cables to the PC. IF you know the usb cables are good and have verified that they are connected properly, try connect to a different usb port on the PC, sometimes ports go bad. If that still doesn't work, the most likely the hard drive has gone bad.

Can't Connect

Hi Jesse. Have you tried, or can you try the drive on another computer ? That's a good way to check if the drive itself is getting defective. I'd try that one first ! It could be also the firewire cable, have you tried another one ? Else, it could be the hard drive in the lacie inclosure that's getting weak (you might wanna backup your data if you ever get it to be recognized, if there's anything that's important on it), or the lacie enclosure's firewire controller that's doing freegames. I've seen such problems more than often, and if nothing has changed in your setup since it was working, i'm betting on the failed drive. They aren't that reliable as we know. Hope that helps a bit. Thanks! cheebster.
