Question about Brother Printers & Copiers

Had paper jam now the printer says routine mantiance needed chapeter 34 trouble shootingg user guide (do not have guide :-) )

    mcf-230c printer says to use user guide and look under trouble shooting 34 I do not have a user guide so help please The paper jam is removed then this message shoulded up?

    phoned 1800 brother they say i have to take it in are, you sure they say something with the ink and cleaning tray

    OH thanks for manual though still not fixed

Usually, routine maintenance messages won't cause any problems.
Here is a link to the manual. There is a section on routine maintenance, but it isn't on page 34. Take at look at that and let me know if it helps you. I'll be doing the same. Please get back to me.

Clean unable 46, See Trouble shooting and routine maintenance chapter in User's Guide.


Hi there. . . okay . . . Follow this step
1.) Unplug your printer.
2.) Plug your printer again while holding the menu button 15 sec.
3.) select 8 by using the arrow buttons ,push OK and select 0 and push OK
4.) then numbers appear looks like this ###:### ###:###.
5.) now push the MONO button until the purge:#### appears on the LCD
6.) Select 2, push ok, select 7,push ok,select 8,push ok, select 3,push ok

7.) - switch off the printer ,switch it on
- ready to print

I have a MFC-5460CN and it is flashing across the screen "print unable 30 see troubleshooting and routine maintenance chapter in user guide" and we do not have a user guide


The 30 error says the carriage is not moving freely. Look on the extreme right and left with a light and see if there's a paper wad on either side. If you had a paper jam you could have pulled the encoder strip out of the sensor slot on the carriage and may need a shop to repair, but check for paper first.

Unable to init.


If there is no jam it is generally a mechanical issue such as...

1. The planetary arm assembly not engaged correctly
2. Ink cartridge/purge switch harness not connected correctly
3. Purge cam switch broken
4. Gear(s) on maintenance unit broken
5. Paper feed motor broken
6. Main PCB defective

I find that if there was a paper jam, and the user pulled the paper out, option 4 is most likely. It is the smallest of cracks but ruins everything!

HI Paper got jammed whilst printing, retrieved paper and message now reads See trouble shooting and routine mainenance Chaper in users guide what do I do now do not have manual to hand


if the paper is fully out if not then check there might be a small piece stuck on the sensor,try to check the sensor actuator may be misplaced it usually black in color try to fix it properly so that it moves freely.

I am having a problem as well. I can't use the Fax either. Very difficult to see th jammed paper. Followed all instructions, but unable to clear the jam.
