Using a headset

Check to sound volume level, increase it if required.
Check the mute button has not been selected.
Check Device manager for the audio device, if there a yellow mark against the audio device then the audio driver has not been installed - reinstall the audio driver.

I have a Gateway DX4300 and want to use my LED TV with surround sound on a receiver as the monitor. No HDMI slot on computer so I have Y-connector in headphone jack on front of box and I plan to connect...

Open your sound contol monitor (the speaker icon in the system tray) and makes sure there are no checks in the boxes for audio output. Also make certain the audio out device is set to your sound device. eg "realtek HD Audio" or whatever your PC sound card is. Make certain the slider buttons are about half way up for the Audio output. If your sound card is installed ok. your sound should now work.

No sound on computer

It means no audio driver is installed on your PC. That is the audio device that it is referring to. The audio driver installer came with your motherboard support CD. If it is no longer available you can download realtek audio driver online for free.

Finding a sound card for my gateway laptop to be able to record audio

A sound card is a piece of hardware, and if not included with your laptop, you need to buy one and install it.

It is possible that you have a sound card, but it might be disabled in the BIOS. You would need to restart your computer, and enter the BIOS setup program to check if you have a sound card that is disabled.

You can go to gateway website and their website will tell you which hardware is installed
